An orthopaedic joint replacement system is shown and described. The system includes a number of prosthetic components configured to be implanted into a patient's knee. The system also includes a number of surgical instruments configured for use in preparing the bones of the patient's knee to receive the implants. A method or technique for using the surgical instruments to prepare the bones is also disclosed.

System and method for surgically-preparing a patient's femur

A trial neck for hip surgery and a method of attaching a trial neck to a femoral canal preparation instrument. The trial neck includes a body portion including a bore for receiving a proximal end of a femoral canal preparation instrument. The trial neck also includes an elongate neck extending from the body portion. The trial neck further includes a locking mechanism comprising a lever. The lever has a first end integral with the body portion. The lever also has a second end. The lever further has an engagement surface located intermediate the first end and the second end. The second end of the lever is actuable to urge the engagement surface against the proximal end of the femoral canal preparation instrument to secure the proximal end of the femoral canal preparation instrument within the bore.

Trial neck and method

A surgical component, a kit including the surgical component, and a surgical method. The surgical component includes a body portion. The surgical component also includes an elongate stem for inserting into an intramedullary canal of a patient. The elongate stem extends distally from the body portion. The elongate stem has a longitudinal axis; a proximal end; a distal end; and a plurality of splines located on an outer surface of the stem. The splines are circumferentially arranged around the stem. At least some of the splines are tapered such that each tapered spline is narrower at a distal part of that spline than at a part of that spline that is proximal with respect to the distal part. The surgical component further includes an elongate neck portion extending from the body portion at a non-zero angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the stem.

Surgical component, kit and method

The invention relates to a cutting block for use in preparing a bone during orthopaedic surgery. The cutting block comprises a bone attachment face, and a front face opposing the bone attachment face. The cutting block further comprises at least a first group of bone pin holes, each hole being configured for removable receipt of a bone pin. The first group of pin holes includes at least two bone pin holes that extend between the bone attachment face and the front face. The at least two bone pin holes extend parallel to each other in an anterior-posterior direction. The at least two bone pin holes are offset from each other in at least one of a superior-inferior direction or a medial-lateral direction. The at least two bone pin holes are interconnected.

Cutting block

A guide and a method for locating a cutting block on a resected distal surface of a patient's femur in a knee replacement procedure. The guide includes a first body part for positioning over the resected distal surface. The first body part includes a pair of posteriorly extending feet for engaging with the posterior condyles of the femur. The guide also includes a second body part for positioning over the resected distal surface. The second body part includes at least one pair of locator holes for locating fastener pins by which the cutting block can be fastened to the resected distal face. The first body part is removably attachable to the second body part in a plurality of discrete positions for selectively angling the second body part with respect to an anatomical feature of the patient when the feet of the first body part are engaged with the posterior condyles.

Method of using an orthopaedic instrument system in surgically-preparing a patient's femur

An orthopedic joint replacement system is shown and described. The system includes a number of prosthetic components configured to be implanted into a patient's knee. The system also includes a number of surgical instruments configured for use in preparing the bones of the patient's knee to receive the implants. A method or technique for using the surgical instruments to prepare the bones is also disclosed.

Orthopaedic instrument system for surgically-preparing a patient's femur

A measuring instrument () for use during an orthopaedic surgical procedure to measure first and second distances from a reference point on a bone to first and second measurement points respectively. The measuring instrument has a first scale () for displaying the first distance and a second scale () for displaying the second distance. It includes a mask () which can be positioned against the second scale after the first distance has been measured in a position that is selected relative to the second scale dependent on the measured first distance, to restrict the length of the second scale that is visible to the user.

Method for preparing a patient's tibia in an orthopaedic joint replacement procedure

A method of manufacturing a surgical instrument or prosthesis and an injection moulded surgical instrument or prosthesis are described. A first material is injected into a first mould to form an interim component. A second material is injected into a second mould containing at least part of the interim component to form the surgical instrument or prosthesis such that portions of the first and second materials are exposed at the external surface of the surgical instrument or prosthesis. The first and second materials are visually distinct such that at least one exposed portion of the first or second material adjacent to an exposed portion of the other material forms a marking which is visible to a user.

Method of manufacturing a surgical instrument or prosthesis

A bone sizing guide for assessing the size of an end of a bone includes a body () having a foot component () with a first surface () to rest against an end surface of the bone and a foot () extending transverse to the first surface to contact a side surface of the bone. A superstructure () is coupled to the body so that the superstructure can slide relative to the body towards and away from the body, at least one of the superstructure and the body being adjustable so that the rotational direction in which the superstructure extends relative to the foot component about a first axis extending transverse to the first surface is adjustable. A stylus () extends from the superstructure transverse to the first surface of the body, the stylus having a tip to contact a surface of the bone, and a scale () is coupled to or formed on a first one of the superstructure and the body. An indicator () is coupled to or formed on a second one of the superstructure and the body to identify a position on the scale. The identified position on the scale shifts as the superstructure slides towards or away from the body, and the identified position shifts as the superstructure rotates relative to the body without sliding motion between the superstructure and the body, such that the identified position on the scale is indicative of the distance between the stylus and the foot.
