Light emitting diodes, display systems, and manufacturing methods are provided. In an embodiment, by way of example only, a light emitting diode ('LED') include a die and a lens. The die is configured to emit wavelengths of light within a first predetermined spectral range. The lens is disposed on at least a portion of the die and is configured to filter the light emitted from the die such that a second predetermined spectral range is emitted from the LED.

Light emitting diodes, display systems, and methods of manufacturing light emitting diodes

A light source and a method for constructing a light source for a display device are provided. A first member having first and second sides and an opening therethrough is provided. A seal is positioned on the first side of the first member and on at least one side of the opening, the seal having a first thickness. A second member is positioned on the first side of the first member such that the seal is between the first and second members. A light emitting diode (LED) operable to emit light is positioned at least one of partially between the first and second members and partially within the opening. The first member is secured relative to the second member causing a force to be applied to the seal such that the thickness of the seal is reduced to a second thickness and substantially no light can propagate between the seal and the first and second members.

Backlight for a display device with improved filtering and method for constructing the same

A lighting assembly topology that utilizes spectrum controlling materials to render the illumination compatible with night vision imaging systems. The lighting assembly can be used as either a general illumination source or can be used as a backlight for a transmissive display such as a liquid crystal display. The lighting assembly makes use of spectral filtering which is both transmissive and absorptive for specific spectral regions. The exit port of the lighting assembly is completely filtered with a red and near infrared reflective filter. The absorption of the near infrared spectrum to which NVIS are sensitive is reflected by the typical near infrared reflective filter covering the exit port and absorbed within the material lining the housing of the lighting assembly.

Spectrally controlled display backlight emissions for night vision imaging system compatibility

A temperature sensor for the liquid crystal portion of a liquid crystal display assembly which includes a thin layer of transparent conductive material which is spread across the viewing area of the display. This layer of transparent conductive material can provide heat to warm up the display when a large voltage is put across it, and can also be used to measure liquid crystal temperature. It is known that the resistance of materials such as indium tin oxide (ITO) changes at a known rate with respect to temperature. By using this transparent layer of material in the stacked elements of a liquid crystal display assembly, an accurate reading of the liquid crystal temperature can be made.

Transparent temperature sensor for an active matrix liquid crystal

A method and apparatus for dimming a lamp in a backlight system of a display device, e.g., liquid crystal display ('LCD'), with a brightness dimming ratio of 10,000:1, which is a factor of 10 better than conventional dimming devices. A switch is provided in an inverter circuit, which has reactive components, that drives the lamp. The is positioned in the inverter circuit such that, when it is closed, the energy stored within the reactive components of the inverter circuit is discharged to ground. In one embodiment, the signals from the power supply are pulse width modulated.

Method and apparatus for dimming a lamp in a backlight of a liquid

An apparatus which outputs very low duty cycle pulses of a consistent width. It is common to use a pulse width modulator as part of a liquid crystal display dimming system to vary the brightness. In the typical pulse width modulating scheme for lamp dimming, certain noise irregularities may appear at the beginning of a ramping voltage. These irregularities result in pulse widths which vary greatly. In the present invention, the slope of the ramping voltage is greatly increased at the beginning of the period, thus making the comparison between the reference voltage and the ramping voltage more accurate.

Very low duty cycle pulse width modulator

An amplifier which outputs a nonlinear function in response to a linear input. The nonlinear response is a piece-wise linear approximation. The circuit includes an op amp which outputs a ramping voltage and a series of stages which change the scope of the ramping voltage. As the output of the op amp reaches a particular breakpoint, an additional stage of the circuit is activated so as to change the slope of the output. The new line segment has a new slope such that the combination of all these stages approximates a nonlinear response.
