Collet chucks are described herein having design and architecture for minimizing and/or mitigating collet misalignment during rotary tool coupling operations. For example, a collet chuck comprises a housing for connection and rotation with a spindle about an axis of rotation, wherein the housing defines a socket for receiving a collet. The collet comprises a nose end engaging the socket and a second tapered end engaging a locknut assembly.

Inverted piloted collet chuck and applications thereof

In one aspect, tool holders employing axial sleeves and dampening elements are described herein. Tool holders described herein define a central longitudinal axis and comprise a tool holder body having a connector portion and a holder portion. The connector portion is structured to engage a rotary machine and the holder portion is disposed opposite the connector portion and has an inner diameter surface comprising a plurality of axial grooves. Tool holders described herein further comprise a tool receiver structured to receive at least a portion of a cutting tool, the tool receiver having an outer diameter surface comprising a plurality of axial grooves. The tool receiver is mounted in the holder portion so as to align the axial grooves of the inner and outer diameter surfaces and define axial sleeves filled with dampening elements.

A process of grinding a pre-ground part wherein the method includes the steps of: providing a pre-ground part containing a bore, and the pre-ground part having an exterior surface with one or more to-be-ground exterior surface regions; positioning a loading tool within the bore of the pre-ground part; exerting a loading tool load on the loading tool which in turn exerts a part load on the pre-ground part; removing material from the one or more to-be-ground surface regions of the pre-ground part when under the part load to form an as-ground part; and unloading the part load from the as-ground part.

A cutting tool includes a cutting tool body having an axial forward end, an axial rearward end, a head portion adjacent the axial forward end and a shank portion adjacent the axial rearward end. The head portion includes a partial frusto-conical portion having a first lateral edge and a second lateral edge; a first side surface having a first lateral transition edge and a first terminal edge, wherein the first lateral transition edge is adjoined to the first lateral edge of the partial frusto-conical portion; and a second side surface having a second lateral transition edge and a second terminal edge, wherein the second lateral transition edge is adjoined to the second lateral edge of the partial frusto-conical portion, and wherein the first terminal edge is adjoined to the second terminal edge to form a cutting edge. The cutting tool also includes a hard cutting tip.

Wear resistant cutting tool

A tool shank for use with a cutting insert in a rotary cutting tool includes a body having, and adapted to be rotated about, a central longitudinal tool axis, the body having a tip portion structured to receive at least a portion of the cutting insert therein. The shank also includes a pair of chip flutes formed in the body and a pair of recesses, each recess bordering a respective chip flute. Each recess includes a rim portion extending perpendicular to the tool axis and a bearing surface extending at an incline relative to the tool axis. Each rim portion is adapted to engage a corresponding surface on the cutting insert. Each bearing surface is adapted to engage a corresponding bearing surface on the cutting insert in a manner such that the cutting insert is pulled against the body when the rotary cutting tool is rotated about the tool axis.

A rotary cutting tool that is composed of a tool shank with at least one chucking groove or chip flute and one exchangeable cutting insert. At the tip of the shank a recess for accommodating the cutting insert is provided. The tool shank, on its circumference, has a limb with a bearing surface that is inclined relative to the tool axis and that corresponds to a likewise inclined bearing surface on a wing of the cutting insert. The inclination of the bearing surfaces produces an axial force that retains the cutting insert on the tool shank.

A side actuated collet lock mechanism includes a collet; a drawbar at least partially disposed within the collet, and a pair of wedge members threadingly received onto each end of a double-ended drive screw. The drive screw is rotated to cause the wedge members to move downward such that a first cam surface engages the drawbar. The drawbar and collet are pulled into the tool holder and firmly secure the shank. To remove the shank, the drive screw is rotated in an opposite direction to cause the wedge members to move upward such that a second cam surface engages the drawbar. The drawbar and the collet are pushed out from the toolholder, thereby releasing the shank.

An collet and lock nut assembly includes a collet for receiving a cutting tool shank and a lock nut for creating a gripping force between the collet and the shank. The collet has a nose portion and a body portion separated by an annular groove. The lock nut has a plurality of retention tabs and a corresponding number of clear portions. The collet and lock nut assembly can be easily assembled by inserting at least one retention tab within the groove of the collet, and then applying pressure to the collet such that the remaining retention tabs of the lock nut are received within the groove of the collet to place the assembly in a locked position. The collet and cutting tool shank can be drawn from the tool holder by applying rotational torque to the lock nut. The collet is easily removed from the lock nut by applying pressure in any circumferential, lateral direction against the collet.

Method of assembling a collet and lock nut assembly

An assembly generally comprises a collet for receiving a cutting tool shank and a lock nut for creating a gripping force between the collet and the cutting tool shank. The collet has a nose and the lock nut has a front face that is substantially flush with the nose. The lock nut further has a fastening element that mates with a fastening element of a coolant sealing ring for attaching the coolant sealing ring to the lock nut so that the coolant sealing ring may be detached from the lock nut.

A collet and lock nut assembly includes a collet for receiving a cutting tool shank and a lock nut for creating a gripping force between the collet and the shank. The collet has a nose portion and a body portion separated by an annular groove. The lock nut has a plurality of retention tabs and a corresponding number of clear portions. The collet and lock nut assembly can be easily assembled by inserting at least one retention tab within the groove of the collet, and then applying pressure to the collet such that the remaining retention tabs of the lock nut are received within the groove of the collet to place the assembly in a locked position. The collet and cutting tool shank can be drawn from the tool holder by applying rotational torque to the lock nut. The collet is easily removed from the lock nut by applying pressure in any circumferential, lateral direction against the collet.

A drill comprises a drill body and a removable tip. The drill body has a main body portion, a thread, and a reduced diameter portion between the main body portion and the thread. The removable tip has a main body portion and a thread that is adapted to engage the thread of the drill body. One of the threads is an internal thread within a connection bore. The other thread is an external thread extending from a shaft. The internal thread is defined by a front face, a rear face, and a radial surface extending between the front and rear faces. The external thread is also defined by a front face, a rear face, and a radial surface extending between the front and rear faces. The shaft is adapted to be inserted in the connection bore and rotated to engage the internal and external threads with one another.

Briefly, according to this invention, there is provided a balancing assembly for balancing a rotating member and the combination of a rotating member and balancing assembly. The balancing assembly includes an annular ring, a locking member and a cover. The annular ring has an opening for receiving the rotating member and at least one removable primary balancing weight and at least one removable secondary balancing weight. The locking member secures the annular ring with respect to the rotating member. The cover operatively contains the secondary balancing weight with respect to the annular ring and includes a connecting section for removably coupling the cover to the annular ring.
