Improvements to airborne weather radar systems onboard an aircraft that apply forecasting modeling techniques to output a forecast of future 3-dimensional (3D) radar reflectivity returns, forecasted composite radar image data, forecasted changes to potentially hazardous weather cells, including forecasts of future expected hail size and forecast which regions of airspace may be associated with future convective storms. The range of the forecast may be limited to approximately the range of the weather radar, which may be a few hundred nautical miles. Depending on the type and speed of the aircraft, the forecast duration may be approximately thirty minutes or less, e.g., the amount of time to reach the limits of the radar range.

Weather radar short-term forecast for in-flight cockpit displays

Systems and methods provide dynamically modifiable parameters in required time of arrival (RTA) speed regions of an assigned flight path of an aircraft. The system includes a vertical situation display (VSD) rendering thereon a vertical flight profile of the assigned flight path. A control module is coupled to the display system and configured to: demark the vertical flight profile with a plurality of RTA speed regions related to an initial speed profile; render an RTA speed band graphic having demarked sections vertically representing a speed minimum and speed maximum for an respective RTA speed region, the RTA speed band graphic representing a normalized speed range between zero and a maximum value for each respective RTA speed region. The control module accepts user modifications and updates the RTA speed band graphic and the current speed profile to reflect user input.

A method for performing performance prediction with respect to a vertical flight plan. A system performs performance prediction with respect to a vertical flight plan of an aircraft that includes determining which vertical flight plan rules of a plurality of vertical flight rules that have been loaded in a predictions processor are active by monitoring for criteria that are used to initiate or terminate one or more of the vertical flight plan rules. Aircraft state is predicted at waypoints along a lateral flight path in view of active vertical flight plan rules, and the predicted aircraft state is updated within an integrated flight plan database that stores prediction performance data associated with the aircraft's flight.

System and method for vertical flight planning

Systems, methods and protocol for assuring separation of aircraft during parallel approaches. The systems, methods and protocol function in cooperation with existing TCAS to facilitate approaches of multiple aircraft on closely-spaced parallel runways. The systems, methods and protocol utilize data transmissions from equipped aircraft to obtain tracking information which is used in separation algorithms to generate alerts to an observer of possible threats. The systems, methods and protocol facilitate parallel approaches to closely-spaced parallel runways under Instrument Approach Procedure.

Airborne alerting system

The instant invention provides a system and method for controlling the flight of an aircraft to meet an RTA. The system comprises a speed profile generator that communicates with a trajectory generator to produce a speed profile signal that enables the aircraft to reach a waypoint substantially at a predetermined time. In the system of the instant invention, the speed profile generator receives a nominal speed command signal, a time error signal and a sensitivity signal. Based on these inputs, the speed profile generator produces a speed profile signal. The trajectory generator receives the speed profile signal and a required time of arrival signal. Based on these signals, the trajectory generator produces a time error signal and a sensitivity signal. This sensitivity signal represents the sensitivity of the time error signal to changes in the speed profile signal.
