An improved medical pad for contact thermal exchange with a patient includes a fluid circulation layer for containing a thermal exchange fluid circulatable therethrough, a first port and a second port for circulating the thermal exchange fluid in to and out of the fluid circulation layer, and a hydrogel layer interconnected to and extending across one side of the fluid circulation layer to define an adhesive surface for adherence to a patient's skin. The hydrogel layer can include an ultraviolet light-cured composition with a cross-linking copolymer, water, and glycerol. The hydrogel layer is provided to have a thermal conductivity of at least about 1.9 ca/hr-cm-° C.

A medical pad has multiple layers. A first layer is for containing a first thermal-exchange fluid circulatable therethrough, with the medical pad being operable for thermal exchange between the first thermal-exchange fluid and a patient through a first side of the first layer. A second layer of the medical pad is interconnected to a second side of the first layer, opposite to the first side of the first layer. The second layer encloses a second thermal-exchange fluid that may have a freezing point of 0&#xb0; C. or less. The medical pad is operable for thermal exchange between the second thermal-exchange fluid and the patient.

A system and method provide for the interconnection of a medical fluid processing system with at least one patient temperature control pad positionable on a patient. Includable in the system is at least one connector interconnected and/or interconnectable to the medical fluid processing system and at least one connector interconnected and/or interconnectable to the at least one temperature control pad, wherein the connectors include an orientation device which provides for interconnection of the connectors at a predetermined orientation.

A connector apparatus employable in a patient temperature control system includes a connection end which is employable for connecting to at least one other connector in the system. Includable in the connection end is an orientation device configured to align the connectors and provide for interconnection only at a predetermined orientation. The connector may be configured as either a male or female style connector and include one or more engagement devices or surfaces for engaging with another connector.

An inventive medical thermal exchange pad is provided that includes a pliable fluid containing layer and at least a first plurality of adjacent fluid channels of coincidental configurations with the fluid containing layer. A second plurality of fluid channels may also be provided in the fluid containing layer, wherein the second plurality of fluid channels are of coincidental configurations different than those of the first plurality of fluid channels. The pad may be defined to include a central segment with one or more flap segments separately and pivotably interconnected to the central segment. In particular, a plurality of side flap segments may be provided, wherein U-shaped portions of one of the first and second plurality of fluid channels extend through at least one of the side flap segments. Further, end flap segment may be provided. In one embodiment, fluid inlet and outlet ports to/from fluid circulation layer may be disposed in the end flap segment. Dual right side and left side pads having the noted features may be adapted for use on the back region of a patient. In such applications, separated side flap segments may extend around upper back-to-outside shoulder, the ribcage and lower back-to-hip/buttocks regions of a patient. The end flap segment may extend from the scapula to top shoulder region of a patient.
