An electromagnetic device is provided and includes a stator defining a bore, a rotor rotatable within the stator bore and having permanent magnetic elements disposed about an outer surface thereof to define a series of magnetic poles, power coils configured to generate a power current as a first portion of the magnetic poles pass each of the power coils due to rotor rotation and sense coils configured to generate a sense current as a second portion of the magnetic poles pass each of the sense coils due to the rotor rotation.

Electromagnetic device

A self-regulating permanent magnet device has a first rotor segment and second rotor segment, each supporting a set of permanent magnets, wherein the position of the second rotor segment relative to the first rotor segment is modified based on the speed of the self-regulating permanent magnet device. By modifying the position of the second rotor segment relative to the first rotor segment, the alignment between their respective sets of permanent magnets, and therefore, the electromotive force (emf) generated in the stator coils is regulated. The position of the second rotor segment is defined by the connection of a torsion spring between the first rotor segment and second rotor segment and a reactionary torque device connected to the second rotor segment. The torsion spring creates a spring force that acts to maintain the alignment between the first rotor segment and the second rotor segment. The reactionary torque device provides reactionary torque that is proportional to the speed of the self-regulating permanent magnet device and opposes the spring force. As the speed of the self-regulating permanent magnet device increases, the reactionary torque causes the second rotor segment to rotate, thereby creating a misalignment between the first rotor segment and second rotor segment.

An electric power starter/generator, for converting electrical energy from a remote dc electrical power source to mechanical energy to start a turbine engine in the start mode, and for converting mechanical energy from the turbine engine to electrical energy to power utilization equipment in the generate mode, comprises a shaft for transferring rotational mechanical energy between the electric power starter/generator and the turbine engine, a permanent magnet synchronous machine having a rotor driveably coupled to the shaft and a stator. The permanent magnet synchronous machine produces polyphase ac electric power when driven as a generator, and rotational mechanical energy when driven as a motor. A bidirectional ac-dc power converter having a dc and an ac input/output produces variable frequency polyphase ac excitation from the dc electrical energy at the dc input/output to drive the permanent magnet synchronous machine as a brushless dc motor to generate rotational mechanical energy to start the turbine engine during the start mode. The power converter alternately produces dc electrical energy from the polyphase ac electrical energy generated by the permanent magnet synchronous machine when driven by the turbine engine during the generate mode.

A dynamoelectric machine such as a generator has stator winding end turns which extend beyond the ends of a stator core of the apparatus. The end turns are cooled by conveying fluid coolant from back iron cooling grooves to fluid coolant exit ports through which the coolant is distributed onto the end turns. The cooling arrangement eliminates the need for separate spray rings or nozzles and is low in cost and easy to clean.

A permanent magnet generator includes a rotor having poles wherein one of poles of the rotor is non-magnetic. A stator has stator windings wound in cooperation with the poles of the rotor. The non-magnetic pole establishes at least one predetermined position of the rotor. A sensing coil is wound on the stator. The sensing coil responds to the non-magnetic pole by providing an electrical signal indicative of the predetermined position of the rotor.

The problem of assembling and maintaining good electrical contact in a rotating rectifier assembly (40) is solved using brazed connections. The rectifier assembly (40) includes a cylindrical housing (44) receiving a pair of coaxial copper plates (50,52) which act as outputs. Each copper plate (50,52) has three angularly spaced, square-shaped diode wafers (64,70) brazed thereto on one face. The opposite face of each diode wafer (64,70) is brazed to a conductive strap (68,74). The straps (68,74) extend radially outwardly. The two plates (50,52) are angularly aligned so that their respective diode wafers (64,70) are in angular alignment, with the straps (68,74) for the aligned diode wafers (64,70) of each plate (50,52) being soldered together to provide a phase connection. A conductive strap (58,60) is brazed to each of the two plates (50,52) for connection to conductive posts (48) which connect to the main field (32).

Rotating rectifier assembly

An electric generator and a method of securing a connection between flexible electrical leads from a rectifier and a main field winding in a rotor of the generator wherein the leads are arranged so that they extend through a generally axially extending hole in the rotor with their free ends being connected in a parallel splice configuration which extends radially outward from the hole with the connected free ends being secured with respect to the rotor so as to remain in the radially outward extending position during rotation of the rotor. The rectifier is located at one end of the magnetic core and field winding of the main generator with the rectifier leads extending through a hole in the magnetic core and a field winding insulator to the opposite end of the magnetic core and field winding for connection with the field winding leads. Rotational forces will not pull the lead wire connections apart and the connections are readily accessible for repair.

In order to provide a fastener sealing system that is operable in an environment of high ambient temperature, while at the same time utilizing seals that are made of materials that are ordinarily not capable of withstanding such high ambient temperature, the system includes a boss integrally associated with a housing defining a cooled interior chamber. The boss has a fastener-receiving opening formed by a bore and a counterbore defining an inwardly projecting shoulder therebetween. In the vicinity of the inwardly projecting shoulder, the boss is exposed to cooling within the cooled interior chamber, and a fastener is provided having a shank portion with a first diameter substantially the same as the diameter of the bore in the boss along a portion of the length thereof and a second diameter substantially the same as the diameter of the counterbore in the boss along the remainder of the length thereof. The fastener is releasably retained within the cooled interior chamber defined by the housing. The system also includes a resilient seal adapted to receive the shank portion of the fastener so as to be located in or near engagement with the inwardly projecting shoulder when the fastener is releasably retained within the cooled interior chamber. With this arrangement, the resilient seal is isolated from the high ambient temperature at a point where the boss is exposed to cooling within the cooled interior chamber in a manner facilitating the utilization of conventional seal materials.
