A problem of incomplete inhibition of harmful cells/bacteria and short duration of time, after the photodynamic treatment, during which such cells may re-grow, is solved by exposing the target bacteria with a multi-component photosensitizer material formed by adding a predetermined potentiating chemical to a conventional single-component photosensitizer at the target, prior to irradiating the target with light. The multi-component photosensitizer is effectuated by forming a mix of the two chemical compositions or by sequential exposure of the bacteria to a single-component photosensitizer and the potentiating chemical of choice.

Exemplary embodiments of apparatus and method for harvesting small portions of tissue ('micrografts') to form grafts can be provided. For example, a hollow tube can be inserted into tissue at a donor site, where a distal end of the hollow tube can have two or more points or extensions to facilitate separation of the micrografts from the surrounding tissue. The exemplary apparatus can be provided that includes a plurality of such tubes for simultaneous harvesting of a plurality of micrografts. The harvested micrografts can have a small dimension, e.g., less than about 1 mm, or less than about 0.3 mm, which can promote healing of the donor site and/or viability of the harvested tissue. The micrografts can be approximately cylindrical or strip-shaped, and can be placed in a biocompatible matrix to form a graft or directly into tissue at the recipient site. Such exemplary micrografts can be obtained from skin or other types of tissue, e.g., various internal organs.

Disclosed is a method for modulating wound healing in a mammal. The method includes the steps of: (a) administering a photosensitizer to a mammal that has an unhealed or partially-healed wound; (b) waiting for the photosensitizer to reach an effective tissue concentration at the wound site; (c) photoactivating the photosensitizer by delivering specifically to the wound site light of a effective wavelength and intensity, for an effective length of time. The modulation of wound healing can include hastening healing by administering a low dose of photodynamic therapy. Alternatively, the modulation can include inhibiting fibrosis by administering a high dose of photodynamic therapy. The photosensitizer can be targeted, for example, to macrophages or myofibroblasts. Targeting can be by conjugation to a targeting moiety such as a protein, peptide or microparticle.
