Two or more dyes or markers, including a dye or marker having an absorbance peak in the 400 to 500 nm range and including a dye or marker having an absorbance peak in the 560 to 700 nm range are mixed together in appropriate ratios so when added to a liquid, such as a petroleum fuel, at combined levels of from 5 to 100 ppm, the colors of the dyes and/or markers cancel each other such that a &ldquo;water-white&rdquo; liquid still appears &ldquo;water-white&rdquo;.

A dye composition has the formula: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and are selected from (A) C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyloxyalkyl, and (B) C.sub.9-12 alkyl, (A) comprising from about 30 to 80 mole % of the R groups, (B) comprising 20 to about 70 mole % of the R groups. The dye composition is useful as a fluorescent tracer in refrigerant lubricants of the polyol ester types used in non-Freon refrigerants.

Liquid petroleum products and industrial liquids are marked with highly soluble silent fluorescent markers having the formula: ##STR1## where R is selected from a linear or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkylcarboxy radical.

Silent fluorescent petroleum markers

Compounds known as 'solid dispersed dyes' are synthesized in a two-phase system from which they disproportionate into a water-immiscible solvent phase, providing marker solutions. Marker solution is added to a petroleum fuel to introduce the compound thereto in dissolved form. Subsequently, extraction of the compound with acidic aqueous solution produces a chromophoric reaction which indicates presence of the compound in the petroleum fuel.

A dye which is either 2-naphthalenol (phenylazo) phenyl azo alkyl derivatives and 1,4-dialkylamino anthraquinone is added to sufficient non-ionic surfactant to compatibilize it with ethanol and an solvent to produce a homogeneous solution. The homogeneous solution is added to ethanol in an amount to provide a desired amount of coloration to the ethanol.

Petroleum fuels are tagged with markers having the formula: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are selected from H, methyl, ethyl, methoxy, halogen, cyano and nitro and R.sup.3 is selected from methyl, methoxy methoxyethoxy and morpholino.

Acid extractable petroleum fuel markers

A tag is added to an asphalt additive, typically an anti-stripping agent. The additive dye is mixed with other components of an asphalt composition and melt processed at 300.degree. F. (149.degree. C.) or above to produce an asphalt composition. Presence of the tag to identify presence of the additive is performed by dissolving the asphalt portion of the composition in a water-immiscible solvent and then extracting the tag in an acidic aqueous solution and developing a color with a diazo compound.

Liquid petroleum products are tagged with a marker which is a compound or mixture of compounds having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are nothing or --O--(C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl).

Liquid petroleum products are marked with markers having the formula: ##STR1## wherein the R.sub.1 's and the R.sub.2 's are the same or different and are each selected from --H and C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyls; provided that at least one, and preferably both, R.sub.1 's are a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 alkyl; and provided that the R.sub.3 's are the same or different and are selected from --H, --NO.sub.2, --Br, --F, --CN, and --Me; and provided that at least one R.sub.3 is selected from --NO.sub.2, --Cl, --Br, --F, and --CN.

Novel dyes are provided having the formula: ##STR1## wherein the R's are the same or different and each is a C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 alkyl.

Disazo colorants having a 4,4'-diaminobenzanilide tetrazo component

A liquid dyestuff, useful as a major component of a ballpoint ink is prepared. A dye base, having both a sulfonic acid group and an azo group bonded to the same aromatic ring system, is provided in the aqueous phase of a two-phase system in which the organic phase is about 30 percent or more benzyl alcohol. In this two-phase system, the dye base is complexed with a diaryl quanidine, and the resulting dye concentrates in the organic solvent phase.
