Asphalt compositions for use in roofing products are disclosed that include a virgin asphalt material and a reclaimed asphalt material. The asphalt compositions exhibit properties comparable to conventional oxidized asphalt compositions, yet the asphalt compositions are made without using an oxidation or air blowing process.

A method for manufacturing a processed asphalt suspension is provided. The method includes dry grinding shingle waste material to a particle size of less than 1 cm, forming ground recycled shingle material, introducing virgin asphalt into a heated slurry tank and mixing the ground recycled shingle material with the virgin asphalt in the heated slurry tank, forming a mixed asphalt slurry, introducing the mixed asphalt slurry into a wet grinding machine, and recovering a processed asphalt suspension comprising particles having a size no greater than about 200 microns. Roofing and paving products manufactured from the processed asphalt suspension are also provided.

System and method for manufacturing asphalt products with recycled asphalt shingles

Thermally stable built-up roofing asphalt ('BURA') composition comprising a paving grade asphalt is disclosed. The paving grade asphalt has been over-blown to a first softening point and an additive is included in an amount to achieve a second softening point. The additive comprises at least at least one ester. The BURA composition is thermally stable at processing temperatures of at least 450&#xb0; F.

A method for substantially reducing sulfur-oxide emissions from an asphalt air-blowing process involves adding an emission-reducing additive to the asphalt prior to air-blowing, or early in the air-blowing process, and filtering the flue gases produced in the process. The emission-reducing additive includes at least one metal hydroxide, metal oxide, metal carbonate, or metal bicarbonate, where the metal is sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, or aluminum. The filter is preferably of the fiber-bed type, and removes at least a portion of the sulfur-containing compounds via condensation. The filtered stream of flue gases is subjected to an incineration process before being passed into the atmosphere.

Method for reducing sulfur-oxide emissions from an asphalt air-blowing process

In a method of melting asphalt in a vessel, the molten asphalt normally emitting fumes, 0.2 weight percent to 6 weight percent of a polymer is added to the asphalt to reduce the visual opacity of the fumes by at least 25% over the same asphalt without the polymer. In another embodiment, the total emissions of benzene soluble suspended particulates is reduced by at least 15% over the same asphalt without the polymer. Preferably, the added polymer has a melt flow index of from 15 grams/10 minutes to 95 grams/10 minutes, and the added polymer reduces the visual opacity of the fumes by forming a skim on the upper surface of the molten asphalt.

A consumable container is molded from a composition comprising 40 to 90 weight % of an asphalt and 10 to 60 weight % of a polymer material, which advantageously can include a first polymer such as PP that imparts heat resistance and a second polymer such as EVA that imparts toughness and impact resistance. This molded asphalt/polymer material preferably has an unnotched Izod impact strength of at least 2 joules. The container is consumable--it can be melted along with roofing asphalt held in the container without adversely affecting the properties of the asphalt and without requiring undue mixing. The container may be used, e.g., to hold roofing or paving asphalt or a recyclable petroleum-derived material, such as used motor oil. In a method for reducing hydrogen chloride emissions from an asphalt blowing process, ferric chloride and/or ferrous chloride are added to the asphalt. A chemical modifier is also added to the asphalt. The asphalt is subjected to a blowing process which produces hydrogen chloride emissions. The addition of the chemical modifier reduces the hydrogen chloride emissions by at least 25% compared to the same process without the addition of the chemical modifier. The addition of the ferric chloride and/or ferrous chloride provides beneficial effects such as increased blowing rate and increased final penetration of the asphalt. Preferably, the addition of the chemical modifier does not significantly reduce these beneficial effects.

In a method for reducing emissions from an asphalt blowing process, an emission reducing additive is added to the asphalt prior to blowing, or early in the blowing process. The emission reducing additive is added in an amount sufficient to reduce the SO.sub.x emissions from the blowing process by at least 25 percent by weight when compared with the same process without the emission reducing additive. The emission reducing additive includes at least two compounds selected from metal hydroxides, metal oxides, metal carbonates and metal bicarbonates, where the metal is selected from sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper and aluminum.

Method for reducing sulfur emissions in processing air-blown asphalt

The present invention provides an elastomeric-asphalt composition which does not phase separate and which is compatible at high temperatures. This compatible material can be produced without the need to use high shear milling equipment. The elastomeric-asphalt composition is not limited by the tendency of other elastomer polymers to be incompatible with asphalt nor does the composition separate into a polymer-rich phase and an asphalt-rich phase. In a preferred embodiment, the elastomeric materials are SBS and SIS block copolymers.
