The module including an air bag assembly comprising an inflatable first bag ( ) and an inflatable second bag ( ), the second bag located within the first bag, the second bag including an opening ( ) to receive the inflator ( ) wherein prior to activation, opposed portions of the second bag, radially outboard of the inflator, are formed into respective flaps, which are overlaid and positioned on a top of the inflator to provide a tortuous path through which any particles can flow prior to entering into a main portion of the air bag.

An air bag for side impact protection system comprising: an air bag (,) having an inflatable first chamber (,) formed of two joined-together first (,) and second (,) panels of material, the first chamber including a forward part (,) and an opposite rear part (,); an inflator (,) for generating inflation gas to inflate the air bag, the inflator including exit ports (,) which channel the inflation gas into the first chamber in a determinable direction; the air bag further including a flow diverter (,) positioned to receive inflation gas and to divert at least a component of the inflation gas to flow generally perpendicular to the first direction. In one embodiment the flow diverter is formed as an open topped tube; in another embodiment; the flow diverter includes a plurality of vent openings in the side of the tube. In a third embodiment of the invention the diverter is formed by a permeable sack of material. In another embodiment of the invention the rear of each of the first and second panels includes a curved portion which is separated by a curved separator panel to form a pressure accumulator.

A side impact system adapted to be mounted upon a support member or pillar (26) of an upholstered vehicle seat (30), the frame including a mounting opening (27) comprising: a bracket (40) having a front face (42) and sides (44a,b), a socket (46) for receiving a snap fastener and receptacle (48) for receiving a tab (80), the receptacle having an open face (49) through which the tab (80) is inserted and a projection (52) extending outward from the front face; a generally rectangular housing (70) having a bottom (72), opposing sides (74a,b) extending from the bottom and ends (76a,b) extending from the bottom and joined to the sides, the bottom (72) including at least one fastener opening (78) and one of the ends (76a), wherein the tab (80) extends outwardly from the top of the housing (70); with the housing received upon the bracket (40) and with the tab (80) within the receptacle (48) and the mounting opening, the socket and the fastener opening (78) are in alignment.

A retainer assembly (22) for supporting an air bag inflator (24), the retainer assembly comprising: a hollow body (40), through which the inflator (24) is inserted, having a first end (28) and a second end (32), the second end including a first member for securing a cooperating second end of the inflator (36), the first end cooperating with a corresponding first end of inflator to provide a friction fit between the two components which acts to reroute gas through the retainer vent notch (46). The retainer (22), along one side thereof includes a set of access openings (48a) and (48b) and along an opposite side thereof a set of mounting holes (50a) and (50b), a respective one of the access openings aligned to a corresponding mounting hole, a set of fasteners (52) mounted to the retainer (22) through corresponding mounting holes (50a) and (50b), the access openings (48a) and (48b) providing access to a portion of the fastener to permit the fastener (52) to be secured to the retainer (22) at the corresponding mounting holes (50a) and (50b).
