A Hall-effect system for providing inputs into a processor includes at least one magnet for establishing a magnetic field, a remote sensor unit and a receive station. The magnet is sized and adapted to be worn on a user's finger, while the remote sensor unit is adapted to be worn on a user's thumb. The remote sensor unit includes a Hall-effect sensor that senses changes in the magnetic field due to the motion of the magnet relative to the Hall-effect sensor. The Hall-effect sensor detects the magnetic field changes, and the remote sensor unit generates a sensor output corresponding to the magnetic field changes. The receive station is connected to the processor. The receive station receives the output from the remote sensor unit and converts the sensor output into an input for the processor.

A method of quantifying a host vehicle's collision risk with a foreign object includes the steps of collecting and preserving a short-term history of range and azimuth data on the object and identifying leading edges of the foreign object. The leading edges are linked to previous detected leading edges in the short term history storage data to define a trajectory for the object, and to calculate range and azimuth velocities and accelerations of leading edges of the foreign object based on the leading edge trajectory. A collision risk P is then calculated for the foreign object using the range and azimuth velocities and accelerations according to a predetermined formula. If the collision risk P falls below a pre-set value, the methods of the present invention calculate an evasive maneuver for the host vehicle based on a vector sum of high risk leading edge risks and locations.

Host-centric method for automobile collision avoidance decisions

A method involves transmitting a first signal to a device, the first signal comprising vehicle identification data and vehicle operational data, receiving a second signal from the device, the second signal comprising road and lane information and vehicle information vectors of other vehicles transiting the road in range of the device, and determining a collision risk based upon the received second signal. The method involves the range-limited communication of vehicle information vectors among a network of devices. The method may include transmitting an operational signal to a vehicle controller, wherein the operation of a vehicle, such as speed, braking, and steering, is altered by the vehicle controller based upon the received operational signal. The method may involve, if the determined collision risk exceeds a predetermined threshold, the transmission of a warning signal by a vehicle computer to a vehicle operator via a warning device controlled by a vehicle controller.

Method for vehicle collision avoidance

Disclosed is a floating sensor system having a casing that encloses a microcontroller. The microcontroller includes a digital processor and a non-volatile memory. The casing also encloses a data bus that connects the microcontroller to an external environment sensor, an RF transceiver, and a battery. The non-volatile memory includes a history file that maintains a record of events sensed by the external environment sensors. The digital processor is configured to establish a pattern of expected external environmental behavior based on the record of events. The digital processor is also configured to emit a signal through the RF transceiver from the system when an unexpected event occurs.

Self-contained sensor package for water security and safety

A method of identifying and imaging a high risk collision object relative to a host vehicle includes arranging a plurality of N sensors for imaging a three-hundred and sixty degree horizontal field of view (hFOV) around the host vehicle. The sensors are mounted to a vehicle in a circular arrangement so that the sensors are radially equiangular from each other. For each sensor, contrast differences in the hFOV are used to identify a unique source of motion (hot spot) that is indicative of a remote object in the sensor hFOV. A first hot spot in one sensor hFOV is correlated to a second hot spot in another hFOV of at least one other N sensor to yield range, azimuth and trajectory data for said object. The processor then assesses a collision risk with the object according to the object's trajectory data relative to the host vehicle.

Apparatus and method for automatic omni-directional visual motion-based collision avoidance

An object localization and tracking system includes a plurality of tags that are placed on respective objects. Each tag includes a transceiver and at least three orthogonal antennas to receive RF energy in a three dimensions. The tag transceiver and antennas cooperate with other tag antennas and transceivers to establish a tag (object) RF network. Each tag further includes a microprocessor, and sensors that determine tag position and relative position of other tags in the tag RF network. A user interface is connected to one of the tag microprocessors. A predetermined algorithm, which describes desired positional information for each tag in the RF network (and its corresponding object), is input into one of the microprocessors through the user interface. A tag audible or visual alert activates when the actual positional information of the tag (and the attached object) do not correspond to the desired positional information.

Active composite RFID tag for object localization and instruction

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for determining the risk of an object collision. The method includes transmitting a signal and analyzing a received signal that is indicative of the presence of a remote object. The signal is then analyzed to determine an initial azimuth value and an initial range for the remote object. Subsequent received signals are continuously analyzed to continuously determine subsequent azimuth values, azimuth value velocities and accelerations, as well as subsequent range values, range value velocities and range value accelerations. The factors are then input into a predetermined formula to yield a risk assessment of collision P. The formulas for determining P can be adjusted to account for such factors as number and proximity of remote objects, as well as the speed and maneuverability of both the remote objects and the vehicle that is avoiding collisions with the remote object(s).

An artificial neuromuscular unit (ANMU) network comprising: a plurality of ANMUs, wherein each ANMU comprises an electroactive polymer (EAP) actuator layer and a uniquely addressable EAP logic layer coupled to the actuator layer; a plurality of inert, non-ion-conducting and non-charge-conducting interfaces mechanically coupled between the ANMUs such that the actuator layer of each ANMU is insulated from the actuator layers and logic layers of the other ANMUs; an EAP common conductor layer coupled to the logic layer of each ANMU such that the logic layer of each ANMU is interposed between the common conductor layer and the corresponding actuator layer; and wherein the logic layer of each ANMU is configured to control the transfer of energy to and from the common conductor layer and the corresponding actuator layer.

An artificial neuromuscular unit (ANMU) comprising: an electroactive polymer (EAP) actuator layer; an EAP logic layer coupled to the actuator layer; an EAP energy layer coupled to the logic layer such that the logic layer is interposed between the energy layer and the actuator layer, wherein the logic layer is configured to control energy transfer between the energy layer and the actuator layer; and a sensor element operatively coupled to the actuator layer and the logic layer, wherein the sensor element is configured to communicate deflections of the actuator layer to the logic layer.

Electroactive polymer-based artificial neuromuscular unit

An electroactive polymer (EAP) structure. The structure includes at least one EAP strand. An EAP strand includes a plurality of EAP segments and a plurality of insulators. An EAP segment includes an EAP tile and an activator. The activator facilitates activation of the EAP tile. The plurality of EAP segments and the plurality of insulators have a concatenated configuration, wherein adjacent EAP segments are electrically separated by one of the plurality of insulators, and wherein the EAP segments are operatively coupled to the plurality of insulators. A method for the system is also described.
