A submersible pumping system includes a pump, a motor that drives the pump and a separator assembly. The separator assembly is for separating gas from the fluid and includes an intake and a vent above the intake. Fluid enters the separator assembly at the intake and the vent returns a portion of the fluid into wellbore for recirculation into the intake.

A system for determining the ability of a selected motor to function in a wellbore preferably includes an input device, a data storage device and a program. The program is preferably configured to determine an expected motor load based on motor input data and application input data. Using the expected motor load, the program determines a projected motor temperature increase. The program adds the projected motor temperature increase with the wellbore temperature to determine a projected operating temperature. The projected operating temperature is compared with the maximum recommended operating temperature of the selected motor, or a list of candidate motors, to determine the ability of the selected motor to function in the wellbore.

An apparatus for producing fluid from a well intersecting a plurality of producing formations. The apparatus includes a pumping system lowered into the well on a production tubing. The well is separated into upper and lower production zones by a packer installed in the well. Fluid is communicated upwardly in the well from the upper zone through a first flow conduit and from the second zone through a second flow conduit. Fluid from both zones is combined and produced upwardly in a single stream. The amount of fluid produced from each zone can be determined with a flow meter which will measure the amount of flow produced from one or more of the zones.

Method and apparatus for producing fluids from multiple formations

An electric submersible pumping system provides for the production of fluids from a well and for limiting the amount of sediment accumulation in the well. The apparatus includes an electric submersible pumping system lowered into a well on a production tubing. The electric submersible system includes an electric submersible pump having an intake at or near a lower end thereof. A seal is connected to the intake and a motor is connected to a lower end of the seal. The apparatus further includes an auxiliary pump having an auxiliary pump discharge at an upper end thereof and an auxiliary pump intake at a lower end thereof. The auxiliary pump is connected to the motor. The system is lowered into the well so that it is positioned below the perforations in a well which communicate a producing formation with the interior of the well. The auxiliary pump intake will receive fluid along with sediments that may be produced by the formation. The auxiliary pump will pump the fluid and sediments upwardly through the auxiliary pump discharge and through discharge tubes connected to the discharge. At least a portion of the fluids and sediment pumped upwardly by the auxiliary pump will be communicated into the production pump intake and produced upwardly through the production tubing along with other fluid from the well. Because the auxiliary pump is continuously taking in fluid, there is a downward flow of fluid past the motor in the well which will cool the motor in the electric submersible pumping system.

Method and apparatus for producing fluid from a well and for limiting accumulation of sediments in the well

The present invention provides a electric submersible pump assembly for producing a fluid from a production zone to the surface and operated independently by one or more electric submersible motors using a dual or multiple gearbox, the electric submersible pump assembly including an inlet pump having a section head into which fluid enters from the production zone to the inlet pump, an outlet pump having an intake section communicating with the inlet pump so that fluid received therefrom is discharged through the outlet pump, an electric submersible motor, a first motor interface that connects the electric submersible motor to the inlet pump, and a second motor interface that connects the electric submersible motor to the outlet pump; each motor interface having a gearbox that connects to the electric submersible motor, a pump shaft connector that connects to the pump, and a seal section that joins the pump shaft connector to the gearbox.

The present invention provides an electric submersible pumping assembly that includes an encapsulated pumping device containing a pump, an electric submersible motor, a sealing device at the top, and an opening device at the bottom. The lubricant-filled, initially sealed, encapsulated pumping device allows the pump and motor to be run in the wellbore without contamination and be left intact until operated.

A downhole rotary water separation system for the separation and transfer of different density fluids in downhole applications using a pump, a motor, a rotary separator and a shaft-incorporated packer, as necessary, with a minimum of conduits and tubes. Torque can be transferred between all moving components as well as the packer such that the motor and pump can be disposed above or below the separator.

The present invention provides a clean water separation system with an electric submersible pumping device and a surface separator and pumping device for the separation and transfer of different density fluids and solids. The electric submersible pumping device can be an encapsulated device that works in conjunction with a separator and pumping system that are located on the surface, to separate fluids and solids.

The present invention provides a downhole water separation system with an encapsulated electric submersible pumping device for the separation and transfer of different density fluids in downhole applications. The encapsulated device works in conjunction with a separator and packer, using a pump assembly and a motor assembly that are contained in an enclosed device, to separate fluids with a minimum use of conduits. The pump and motor are part of an encapsulated single device, and the separation system arrangement permits the motor and pump to be either above or below the separator.
