The present invention relates to the field of automotive heat exchangers, and, in particular, to heat exchanger tanks with headers. This invention eliminates the need for use of an inner flange on the header using a collar that also acts as a rib, thereby providing a compact foot plus header tank arrangement with lower stress on the gasket mating surface of the header and tank. The present invention also provides a method for providing improved headering means for automotive heat exchangers with plastic tanks and headers.

The present disclosure relates to automotive heat exchangers, and, heat exchanger tanks with headers. The heat exchanger eliminates the need for use of an inner flange on the header using a collar that also acts as a rib, thereby providing a compact foot plus header tank arrangement with lower stress on the gasket mating surface of the header and tank. The present invention relates to the field of automotive heat exchangers, and, in particular, to ribbed heat exchanger tanks. This invention uses ribs that are oriented perpendicular to the local wall bending axes, and, therefore, not necessarily perpendicular to or parallel with the plane of the header to improve resistance to thereby reduce wall deflection and reduce stress concentration in or near the ribs.

A manifold for a heat exchanger comprising a tank, a plurality of tubes arranged to receive fluid therein, a plurality of fins for interspacing the tubes, the fins extending along the length of the tubes to thereby define a core section, wherein the header section is formed with multi-point brazing interfaces for securing said header and said core section during a brazing process. One embodiment provides at least one doubled wall area in close proximity to the tube slot areas to form a structure of increased strength, permitting the material to be reduced in relative thickness. The manifold may be formed from flat sheet stock by extended side walls of the header portion joined by a separate cap to close a top portion of the manifold assembly for the purpose of collecting fluid to and from the tubes and said at least one inlet and outlet. For a plastic manifold, the header section is formed with an inner wall defining an extended tube slot area of a header well to receive the plastic tank foot portion thereby increasing the strength of the structure.

A variable speed drive assembly for driving an auxiliary member in an internal combustion engine. The auxiliary member may be a fan connected to a pulley is driven by a drive pulley connected to a crankshaft of the internal combustion engine via a V-belt. At least one of the pulleys is an adjustable drive ratio pulley. An actuator is operatively connected to the drive assembly to controllable change the drive ratio of the pulley. By controlling the drive ratio of the pulley, the speed of the fan can be selectively controlled. The adjustable drive ratio pulley may have an inner idler freely rotatable mounted therein. The actuator may cause the V-belt to engage the inner idler to substantially disconnect a rotatable connection between the fan and the crankshaft thus allowing the fan to windmill.
