MIMO antenna modules and antenna units for a wireless communication system are provided. In one embodiment, a remote unit comprises: a controller module, comprising: a first substrate having a first ground plane, control circuitry and interface circuitry on the first substrate, a first connection region formed in the first substrate; and at least one antenna module coupled to the controller module, the antenna module comprising: a second substrate having a second ground plane, antennas on the second substrate, a second connection region on the second substrate and coupled to the interface circuitry via the first connection region, wherein the second connection region communicates data between the interface circuitry and the antennas, and a set of ground-plane contacts on the second substrate that electrically couple the first ground plane to the second ground plane of the second substrate when the second connector region is engaged with the first connector region.

MIMO antenna module and MIMO antenna unit for distributed antenna system

An embodiment of an antenna module includes a substrate, a first antenna, and a second antenna. The first antenna is disposed on the substrate and is configured to radiate a first signal having a wavelength and a first polarization. And the second antenna is disposed on the substrate and is configured to radiate a second signal having the wavelength and a second polarization that is approximately orthogonal to the first polarization. For example, such an antenna module can include, as the first antenna, a T antenna configured to transmit and receive data that forms a first part of a MIMO-OFDM data symbol, and can include, as the second antenna, an F antenna configured to transmit and receive data that forms a second part of the MIMO-OFDM data symbol.

A method for operating a small cell and a backhaul wireless modem. The method comprises: transmitting from the small cell on a first sub-band in one frequency band in which time division duplexing is used; receiving on the backhaul wireless modem, proximate to the small cell, on a second sub-band in the one frequency band and adjacent to the first sub-band; receiving on the small cell on the first sub-band; and transmitting from the backhaul wireless modem on the second sub-band.

Method and apparatus for operating co-located transceivers on the same frequency band

In a radio access network (e.g., a cellular network), a radio receiver is configured with a switch that alternatively couples an antenna and an impedance-matched load to the remainder of the receiver. Sector load, e.g., rise-over-thermal (ROT), is monitored by comparing a first measurement of signal power in a radio receiver (e.g., signal power output by the receiver) when the radio receiver is coupled to an antenna receiving the data traffic with a second measurement of signal power in the radio receiver when the radio receiver is de-coupled from the antenna.

Measuring interference in radio networks

In a cellular network, a GPS receiver includes circuitry that modulates a global positioning system (GPS) timing pulse signal with a carrier signal and transmits the modulated signal to one or more remote base stations. When the modulated timing pulse signal is received at a remote base station it is demodulated and a timing pulse signal corresponding to the GPS timing pulse signal is recovered. The remote base station may be configured to transmit a reply signal back to the GPS receiver, which can then be used to estimate a propagation delay between the GPS receiver and the remote base station.

Providing global positioning system (GPS) timing signals to remote cellular base stations

Capacity enhancement schemes are described for forward and reverse links of distributed cellular base stations consisting of a central unit and one or more remote units. In general, in one aspect, reverse link capacity is shared among remote units. The capacity sharing can be determined dynamically. The forward link capacity can also be enhanced by estimating the location of the mobile stations.
