A rongeur includes a device body having a first arm and a second arm slidably coupled to the first arm. A handle operatively coupled to the first arm and the second arm is configured to move the second arm along a length of the first arm in a first direction and an opposing second direction. A tip assembly is removably coupled to a distal end of the device body. The tip assembly includes a first tip and a second tip slidably coupled to the first tip. A locking mechanism is configured to removably couple the first tip to the first arm and removably couple the second tip to the second arm. The second tip is movable with respect to the first tip from an open position toward a closed position as the second arm moves in the first direction.

A device and method for dampening a biopsy device externally or internally. One variation of the external dampening device includes a flexible sleeve provided to cover external surfaces of the biopsy device. The dampening device may also include a device to cover the entire device externally, wherein only a needle portion is exposed. Further in another aspect, a spring constant or spring property of the springs used in the biopsy device may be altered to decrease the noise emitted from the biopsy device. A device and method is also disclosed for dampening a biopsy device internally using an elastic damper at the end portions of any springs that may be used in the biopsy device or at the end of a stroke of certain movable portions inside the biopsy device.

A vacuum assisted handheld biopsy device includes a housing, a stylet slideable within a cannula, the stylet having a hollow tube portion and a tissue collection portion coupled together, an actuator slideable within the housing for driving at least one of the stylet and the cannula, a vacuum source in communication with the stylet, and an ambient air opening in selective communication with the vacuum source. The coupling of the hollow tube portion with the tissue collection portion provides a fluid flow path sufficient to provide a vacuum suction to the tissue collection portion. Methods and devices for providing a biopsy device with a modified handle and stylet that provides a vacuum to be delivered to the targeted tissue for removal. The vacuum may draw the tissue into the notch where the tissue may then be severed via the cannula. Alternatively, the tissue may be drawn into to the notch after being severed via the stylet and/or cannula. The vacuum may be used to bring a larger amount of tissue into the notch than would otherwise be brought in the notch if no vacuum was used, providing a larger sample through the same size access point.

The invention described herein relates to an improved device for paracentesis procedures, such as thoracentesis. The device comprises a cannula assembly, valve assembly, and catheter assembly, wherein the cannula assembly is removably attached to the valve assembly, and the valve assembly is removably attached to the catheter assembly. The device can comprise an externally viewable indicator revealing the relative positions of the cannula assembly components. The device can further comprise a locking mechanism which controls the movement between cannula assembly components and is activated and deactivated by the coupling of the cannula assembly to the valve assembly. The device improves the precision and safety of its handling, and offers the practitioner several aspiration alternatives while maintaining separation of the internal and external patient environments.

The invention described herein relates to an improved biopsy needle which enhances the accuracy of the sampling procedure and minimizes the trauma caused by the procedure. The biopsy needle comprises a tip that reduces or minimizes undesirable bias of the needle during sampling penetration of the tissue, the tip comprising a plurality of facets arranged and oriented in a manner which improves the interaction between the needle and tissue during its advancement and penetration therein thereby improving the performance of the biopsy needle. A drainage catheter apparatus for draining fluid from a body cavity of a patient, of the catheter type having an elongated hollow drainage member, a flexible tip, an interfacing hub member, a sealing member, a restraining member, a flexible drawing member and a retention facilitating member. The flexible drawing member capable of altering the flexible tip. This sealing member of elastomeric material seals the draw-string opening to automatically seal the opening from the passage of fluid therethrough, while enabling extension of the flexible drawing member. Similarly, the restraining member facilitates releasable restraint of the draw-string in a desired position. The retention facilitating member facilitates the proper positioning of the flexible drawing member with the restraining member and/or sealing member.
