Techniques that enable a third party to author and add functionality to a target application. A third party may create or author a script that encodes the functionality to be added to the target application. The script may then be provided to and executed by the target application, where execution of the script causes the functionality to be added to the target application. In certain embodiments, the added functionality may be in the form of effects that are output via the target application when the script is executed by the target application. The effects may include audio-visual effects that are displayed or output by the target application and may also include displaying data provided by a third party.

Enabling third parties to add effects to an application

Systems and methods are presented which allow a user's device to accept media from a variety of sources, process those media items based on their characteristics, and deliver the captured media to a pre-established variety of diverse locations with minimal or no user interaction. These systems and methods can also make media items available to a plurality of internet web sites without actually creating and delivering copies of files. In one embodiment, the diverse locations can each have individual delivery protocols (for example, login and formats) and when a number of media are available at the user's device for delivery to storage locations the media can be delivered to pre-established locations with a single user command without regard to the individual location delivery requirements. In another embodiment, processing, delivery, and access to new media items is handled automatically based on pre-established criteria and analysis of the data and metadata of the media items themselves. While unobtrusive user feedback is displayed during media processing, no user attention or intervention is required as long as no changes to the default settings are desired.

System and method for managing media files

One aspect of the concepts presented herein is aggregation and presentation of useful actions for digital media in general and photographs in particular, coupled with federated distribution of this collection of media actions such as printing and storing. In one embodiment, code is provided for use on any website such that media content on supported professional websites, amateur blogs, or even the entire Internet, is presented with an expanded and consistent set of options that the viewing user can exercise. With a minor update to the code for a particular website, website owners can offer a full suite of media actions and immediately begin earning revenue generated from the use of these actions. The code is set such that sites that offer media services over the Internet can obtain instant distribution and additional consumers for their services. The code is, in one embodiment, distributed by a service that makes this all possible by allowing for account management, measurement of usage, reporting, and control of the presentation so that the Internet image interface continues to improve in terms of end user benefit thereby increasing revenue for website hosts, content owners, and the service provider (such as printing) company as well.

Methods and systems for internet distribution of aggregated media actions

The present invention is directed to a system and method which allows for the seamless integration of the sending mechanism with the media acquiring mechanism of a portable device. In this manner the end-user has instant access to media sharing with complete control over how the media is shared. This integration is accomplished by presenting to the user a series of screens that are available directly from the media creation applications (e.g. cameras or audio recorders) and media viewing applications (e.g. photo galleries or screen savers) on the device. When a photo (or other media) is captured or viewed, a series of pre-established processing options, including on-device uses for the media, internet services and accounts, email addresses and/or phone numbers to which the media can be sent are presented to the user. Some options require no further user interaction. Defaults are also available which require no user interaction at all, combining together the manual selection of certain processing options or destinations with the automatic selection of other processing options or destinations. Thus, the sending process becomes essentially a selection process allowing the user to override defaults by either selecting from choices tailored to the user including already known address information of potential recipients or to allow the media to be automatically sent to a previously identified location according to the current 'default' user preferences. In the situation where a new address or phone number is desired, the user can add such information in a simple and straight-forward manner.

System and method for allowing a user to opt for automatic or selectively sending of media

Document libraries that facilitate content contribution to and management of a website. In general, a document library comprises a database, a special 'document library' file system folder and the documents in that folder (or within subfolders of that folder). The database maintains properties of documents in the document library file system folder, and is used to dynamically update views of the document library file system folder and views of properties of the documents. Each document folder is a folder in which content of a specified type may be read and saved.

A system and method for public consumption of communication events between arbitrary processes. In one embodiment, mechanisms are provided by which the system can effectively act to broker a user's communications and thus act as a type of automated assistant. The invention is provided in a notification user context system which determines when it is appropriate or not appropriate to interrupt a user with a notification based on the user's context (i.e., availability to interruption). The system provides for processes to be informed when these notification events are occurring, thus allowing the processes to act on these types of events on the user's behalf. In one example embodiment, a calendaring program may be a type of process that is registered to be informed when communication events occur. When the calendaring program is informed that a notification from another program (e.g., e-mail, instant messaging, etc.) has been refused due to the user being busy, the calendaring program may evaluate the sender, and if appropriate respond with a customized busy announcement that indicates a time when the user may next be available.

System and method for public consumption of communication events between arbitrary processes

A contextually sensitive user interface for defining an e-mail message handling rule is provided. The user interface includes one or more user interface objects for specifying conditions for the rule and one or more user interface objects for defining the actions to be performed if the specified conditions are met. The conditions that are displayed within the user interface for selection are chosen, at least in part, based upon the context in which a request to create the e-mail handling rule is received. The displayed conditions may be based, in part, upon the contexts of reading an e-mail message, creating an e-mail message, creating an alert subscription, or selecting a user name.

User interface for context sensitive creation of electronic mail message handling rules

A method, apparatus, system, and user interface are provided for managing e-mail rules and alert subscriptions from multiple sources. Alert messages and persistent state objects, such as cookies, are examined to determine whether they relate to an alert subscription. If an e-mail message or persistent state object is determined to relate to an alert subscription, a network address for a subscription source identified by the contents of the e-mail message or state object are added to a list of subscription sources. A request may then be received to manage one or more alert subscriptions. In response to the request, each subscription source identified in the list of subscription sources is validated. Each validated subscription source is added to a current subscriptions list, which is displayed to a user. Each subscription in the current subscriptions list may be modified or deleted by the user through a unified user interface for managing e-mail rules and alert subscriptions. Schema and data structures are also provided for communication between an e-mail and alert subscription client and a subscription source.

Method, apparatus, and user interface for managing electronic mail and alert messages

A method and system for downloading an editable web page having corresponding dynamic content. Dynamically rendered web pages are provided with a special script therein. In response to a client request for a dynamically rendered web page, the server sends the editable page with the script embedded therein. When the script is executed at the client, it creates a frame in the browser, and provides a reference to a DLL that is located on the server and the address for the same requested web page. The DLL is executed at the server and, in response, opens the dynamically rendered web page, retrieves dynamic content for the web page from a database, loads the dynamic content into the document, and returns the web page with the dynamic content to the browser as the content for the newly created frame.

Editable dynamically rendered web pages

A Web view page is provided by a browser module operating with a dialog box of an application program. The browser module displays a Web view page in a browser window within the dialog box of the application program, enabling a user to perform browser functions and application program functions by selecting an element in the Web view page. The browser module detects whether a selected element can be processed by the browser module alone, and if not, communicates the selected element to the dialog box of the application program for processing. A server that is capable of interacting with the Web view page implements the functions requested by the user.

System for integrating HTML Web site views into application file dialogs

A system and method for designing web pages that enables web designers to place hyperlinks to web pages independent of any hierarchical relationship between the pages of the website. A link bar element is provided within a description of the website. The link bar element includes a persistent set of links, each link corresponding to one of several content files. One or more of the content files may be a web file. The link bar element is associated with at least one web file by including a link bar name in the at least one web file. In addition, other link bar information is stored in the web file and a description of the website is stored in a description file separate from the at least one web file that is associated with the link bar element. The description file includes an identifier for the link bar node and the one or more links. Based on the link bar element included within the web file, the description file is translated into additional instructions configured to cause a browser to create web links on a corresponding web page. The web links correspond to the one or more links in the link bar element.
