A printer may detect a mismatch between print job attributes and available printer resources. The printer may then determine one or more options to correct the mismatch and may display these options on a user interface screen. The printer may then receive a selection of one of the options, for example from a printer operator. Based on the selection, the printer may take an action to resolve the mismatch.

Method for using a user interface to resolve mismatches between printer resources and print job requirements

Methods for detecting mismatches between print job attributes and printer resources and capabilities that arise after rendering of the print job has begun but before rendering is complete. The method involves detecting the mismatch, placing the print job in a mismatch state and notifying the operator through the printer user interface that a given problem has occurred on a given page.

Method of resolving mismatches between printer resources and print job requirements

A method and apparatus automatically communicating status information relative to a document production job by a printer. An application file is provided that includes information to be reproduced as a document reproduction job. Preferably, the application file is encoded with a document description language. E-mail address information is embedded in the application file relating to the party or parties to receive the status information. The application file is sent to the printer. At the printer, the email address is detected. The application file is processed to produce a printed document and an email message is sent from the printer relative to the status of the document reproduction job.

An electrophotographic copier/printer reproduction apparatus includes a marking engine that has a job image buffer (JIB) that queues jobs from a scanner and a raster image processor (RIP). The scanner supports the copier function of the apparatus and processes original documents by scanning the images thereon to form copier image data that is processed and stored in the JIB. The RIP processes printer data from a computer and transmits this data also to the JIB for further processing and storage. The RIP operates in two printer modes. In a first printer mode, data is sent to the JIB as it is RIPed and no provision is made for an interrupt for a copier job nor can a copy job be scanned in. This provides maximum efficiency for printer operation. In a second, less efficient, printer mode the JIB stores only a few and preferably one-print job at a time to leave room in the JIB for scanning in a copy job via an interrupt operation. A criterion for switching between the two printer modes is time of day, print job backlog or coding of a print job.

Copier/printer with improved productivity

Method and apparatus for printing a color document file having page description commands including process color commands for graphic objects and bitmapped images on an accent color printer. A particular accent color and shade is assigned to each primary color and a particular accent color is assigned to all bitmapped images. A print driver responsive to the color document file and particular color assignments adds color mapping parameters to the color document file to produce a modified color document file. A raster image processor connected to the print driver and responsive to the modified color document file maps the process color commands in the color document file to a shade of a particular accent color for each graphic object, maps the process color commands for all bitmapped images to a specified accent color, and produces a plurality of full page bitmaps, one for each accent color. A print engine capable of printing a plurality of accent color s, is connected to the raster image processor for receiving the full page bitmaps and prints the accent color document. The color document file is supplied to the print driver and raster image processor for printing the accent color document.

Accent color printing

Status and control panel for a remotely located printer. The panel includes input keys and a display device which can display various text strings, icons, screens, and multiple screen sequences. Each display format is prestored in volatile memory in the panel and addressed by display instructions from the associated device over a serial communications line. The display formats are pre-loaded in the memory at the time the device is first powered-up. Some of the input keys on the control panel are defined by the display on the LCD. Icon description language is used to store data about standard icon images, and an interpreter on the panel is used to convert these descriptions into dot-matrix format for use by the LCD.
