A glass container and a process for forming an inorganic silica coating on an exterior surface of the glass container to improve one or more surface characteristics of the glass container. A sol-gel solution including a polysilazane and an organic solvent is applied to the exterior surface of the glass container to form a sol-gel coating thereon. The glass container and the sol-gel coating are then exposed to a water vapor-containing environment and heated at a temperature of between 150 degrees Celsius and 600 degrees Celsius to transform the sol-gel coating into an inorganic silica coating. The as-formed silica coating has a hardness of greater than 8.5 GPa and is bonded to the exterior surface of the glass container through a plurality of siloxane bonds.

Polysilazane-derived coating for glass containers

A process for forming coating on an interior surface of a glass container. A glass preform is formed at blank molding station from a gob of molten glass. Thereafter, a glass container is formed at a blow molding station from the glass preform. A coating material comprising a suspension of nanoparticles in a liquid medium is introduced into an interior of the glass preform or the glass container while the glass is still hot from being formed. Heat from the glass is transferred to the liquid medium to vaporize the liquid medium and form a coating on an interior surface of the glass preform or the glass container. Thereafter, the glass container is annealed.

Glass container coating process

A glass precursor gel and a method of making a glass product from the glass precursor gel are disclosed. The glass precursor gel includes a bulk amorphous oxide-based matrix that is homogeneously chemically mixed and includes 30 mol % to 90 wt. % silica and at least one of the following: (A) 0.1 mol % to 25 mol % of one or more alkali oxides in sum total, (B) 0.1 mol % to 25 mol % of one or more alkaline earth oxides in sum total, (C) 1 mol % to 20 mol % boric oxide, (D) 5 mol % to 80 mol % lead oxide, or (E) 0.1 mol % to 10 mol % aluminum oxide. A method of making a glass product from the glass precursor gel involves obtaining the glass precursor gel, melting the glass precursor gel into molten glass, and forming the molten glass into a glass product.

Glass precursor gel

A glass container and related methods of manufacturing and coating glass containers. The glass container includes an inorganic-organic hybrid coating over at least a portion of an exterior surface of a glass substrate.

Antireflective coating for glass containers

A glass container that includes a microwave susceptor coating on an exterior surface thereof, and a process for healing flaws in an exterior portion of the glass container. When the glass container is exposed to microwave radiation, the microwave susceptor coating generates heat and selectively and locally provides a major portion of such heat to regions of glass in the exterior portion of the glass container that are in close proximity to the flaws. These regions of glass in the exterior portion of the glass container may be selectively and locally heated so that the glass therein can flow and thereby fill-in the flaws in the exterior portion of the glass container. This process can be used to heal flaws in an exterior portion of a glass container without impairing the structural integrity of the glass container.

Glass container coating and surface treatment process

A method of applying a coating to a glass container, which includes the steps of coating an exterior surface of the glass container with a thermally-curable coating material containing electrically-conductive nanoparticles, and exposing the coated container to radio frequency radiation such that absorption of the radio frequency radiation by the nanoparticles internally heats and cures the thermally-curable coating material on the exterior surface of the glass container to result in a cured coating on the glass container.

Curing coatings on glass containers

Methods of manufacturing and coating a glass container by applying an aminofunctional silane coating composition to an exterior surface of the glass container, and then curing the silane coating composition to form a crosslinked siloxane coating on the exterior surface of the glass container.

Coatings for enhancing glass strength

Certain example embodiments relate to coatings comprising nano-particle loaded metal oxide matrices deposited via combustion deposition. The matrix and the nano-particles comprising the coating may be of or include the same metal or a different metal. For example, the coating may include a silicon oxide matrix (e.g., SiO, or other suitable stoichiometry) having silicon oxide (e.g., silica), titanium oxide (e.g., TiO, titania, or other suitable stoichiometry), and/or other nano-particles embedded therein. In certain example embodiments, the coating may serve as an anti-reflective (AR) coating and, in certain example embodiments, a percent visible transmission gain of at least about 2.0%, and more preferably between about 3.0-3.5%, may be realized through the growth of a film on a first surface of the substrate. In certain example embodiments, the microstructure of the final deposited coating may resemble the microstructure of coatings produced by wet chemical (e.g., sol gel) techniques.

Nano-particle loaded metal oxide matrix coatings deposited via combustion deposition

A glass container and related methods of manufacturing and coating glass containers. The container includes a hot end coating that is deposited on an exterior surface and that includes a metal oxide, and a dopant to reduce electrical resistivity of the exterior surface of the container. The container also includes an organic coating electrostatically applied to the exterior surface of the container. Preferably, the organic coating is applied at an ambient temperature and without having to use grounding pins, without having to heat the container, and without having to apply an additional conductive coating layer.

Preparing glass containers for electrostatic coating

A coated glass article, particularly for use as architectural glass, is gold in appearance. The coated glass article includes a glass substrate with an iron oxide coating deposited thereover, the iron oxide coating comprising primarily iron oxide in the form FeO. The coated glass article has an a* value between about &#x2212;5 and about 10, and a b* value between about 10 and about 40, for both transmitted and reflected light.

Certain example embodiments relate to a method of forming a coating on a glass substrate using combustion deposition. A glass substrate having at least one surface to be coated is provided. An organosiloxane inclusive precursor having a ring- or cage-like structure to be combusted is introduced. Using at least one flame, at least a portion of the precursor is combusted to form a combusted material, the combusted material including non-vaporized material. The glass substrate is provided in an area so that the glass substrate is heated sufficiently to allow the combusted material to form the coating, directly or indirectly, on the glass substrate. In certain example embodiments, the precursor is a cyclic siloxane based and/or polyhedral silsesquioxane (POSS) based precursor, which advantageously may affect the coating's transmission and/or reflection properties compared to conventionally used silicon precursors. For example, a single-layer anti-reflective coating including silicon oxide may increase visible transmission of the uncoated substrate by at least about 2.0 %.

Organosiloxane inclusive precursors having ring and/or cage-like structures for use in combustion deposition

A method of making a scratch resistant coated article which is also resistant to attacks by at least some fluorine-inclusive etchant(s) for at least a period of time is provided. In certain example embodiments, an anti-etch layer(s) is provided on a glass substrate in order to protect the glass substrate from attacks by fluorine-inclusive etchant(s), a scratch resistant layer of or including DLC is provided over the anti-layer(s), and a seed layer is provided between the anti-layer(s) and the scratch resistant layer so as to facilitate the adhesion of the scratch resistant layer while also helping to protect the anti-layer(s). Optionally, a base layer(s) or underlayer(s) may be provided under at least the anti-etch layer(s).

Method of making a scratch-and etch-resistant coated glass article

A method is defined for producing an iron oxide coating on a glass article. The article is preferably for use as an architectural glazing. The method includes providing a heated glass substrate having a surface on which the coating is to be deposited. Ferrocene and an oxidant are directed toward and along the surface to be coated, and the ferrocene and the oxidant are reacted at or near the surface of the glass substrate to form an iron oxide coating.
