Sizing agents comprised of dispersed synthetic polymers in an aqueous solution are provided, as well as methods for making these sizing agents and methods for using these sizing agents to size paper. Improved sizing is obtained by including recurring units of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and/or propyl acrylate in the synthetic polymers.

Paper sizing agents and methods

A novel method for preparing anionic, cationic or non-ionic polymeric microemulsions comprising a multi-step process to achieve high solids and low emulsifier and oil content. The polymeric microemulsions are useful in papermaking as retention aids, in solid-liquid separation as flocculants and in enhanced oil recovery as a drive fluid.

Preparation of high solids polymeric microemulsions

A novel method for producing compositions comprising polymeric solution droplets is disclosed. The products are useful as retention aids in paper pulps, as flocculating agents for flocculating a wide variety of dispersions of suspended solids and as drive fluids for use in oil recovery.
