The method operates by enabling a user to place an application in an annotation mode. An annotation is created, and then linked to a portion of an immutable data object. Location information is displayed proximate to the annotation mode location information indicates a location of the linked portion in the data object.

This portion of the source text file includes text that is an accurate textual representation of the portion of the source document. However, the portion of the source text file is paginated differently than the portion of the source document. At least one portion of a source image file is retrieved from a storage device. This portion of the source image file is an image corresponding to the portion of the source document. The portion of the source text file is synchronized with the portion of the source image file to obtain pagination information representative of pagination in the portion of the source document. The text from the portion of the source text file and the pagination information are used to generate at least a portion of the equivalent text file.

The graphic user interface of the present invention permits the user to display, manipulate, and edit the Equivalent File created using the process of the present invention, and to simultaneously view the image file on the display. Using the graphic user interface of the present invention, a user may create libraries of patent Equivalent Files and image files or documents of another type, as well as open cases to include a plurality of different patents or other documents. The Equivalent File may be selectively viewed on the display in an equivalent window. Simultaneous with the viewing of the Equivalent File within the equivalent window, the user may view any portion of an image file within one or more image windows on the display. A variety of other features and functions are provided by the present invention for the manipulation and display of patent documents and other documents on the user interface.
