The invention relates to novel hemoglobin compositions, particularly novel recombinant mutant hemoglobin compositions, which eliminate or substantially reduce 1) the creation of heart lesions, 2) gastrointestinal discomfort, 3) pressor effects, and 4) endotoxin hypersensitivity associated with the administration of extracellular hemoglobin compositions in various therapeutic applications. Applications described include treatments for anemia, head injury, hemorrhage or hypovolemia, ischemia, cachexia, sickle cell crisis and stroke; enhancing cancer treatments; stimulating hematopoiesis; improving repair of physically damaged tissues; alleviating cardiogenic shock; and shock resuscitation.

Reduced side-effect hemoglobin compositions

Methods are disclosed for preparation of chemically-stabilized emulsions of tall oil in water. Temperature and pH are controlled during preparation of the emulsions so as to prevent saponification and neutralization of acids in the tall oil component. The final emulsions have pHs in the range of from about 3.0 to 5.0 and remain phase stable for extended periods of time. Methods are disclosed for using the emulsions for soil treatment to improve soil stabilization and load bearing capacity for roadbed use, for treatment of reclaimed asphalt pavement for reuse as a stabilized base course for roadway construction and for remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil.

Solid waste contaminated with cationic metals is remediated with a composition that reduces the mobility of the metals. A recycled product is formed having improved structural properties for possible use as engineered fill such as road base material. Said composition comprising an emulsion of asphalt or tall oil pitch in water and a chemical fixing agent.

A method to saponify the naturally-occurring acids found in asphalts is disclosed. The method utilizes sodium hydroxide (or other strong base), added to asphalt which is then subjected to high shear mixing, at an elevated temperature. The method disclosed may be used in conjunction with polymers and other modifiers added to asphalt to enhance the asphalt's performance. The asphalt prepared in accordance with the method is used in road applications, roofing applications and numerous specialty applications which use asphalt as the base material. The asphalt prepared in accordance with the method can be used hot, liquefied with solvents or emulsified with water and surfactants.
