A sheet of fibrous web material having one textile-like surface and an opposite substantially smooth surface, a grain depth memory factor greater than 80, an apparent density in the range of about 4 to about 7 pound ream/caliper point in mils, a caliper (at a basis weight between about 50 and about 75 pounds/3000 square feet) greater than 0.008 inch, and a machine-direction sheet stretch of at least 5%. The invention includes a method of manufacturing the sheet comprising partially dewatering a wet fibrous web to about 30% to about 60% solids, conveying the web to a compression nip defined by a smooth-surfaced roll and a textured-surfaced fabric material, moving the fabric material at a speed of about 15% to about 35% less than the surface speed of the smooth-surfaced roll, compressing the web in the nip with a compression force between about 5 pounds/linear inch and about 100 pounds/linear inch, with an average pressure of between about 20 pounds per square inch and about 400 pounds per square inch in the compression nip, subjecting the fabric material to a tension on opposite sides of the compression nip with the tension on the fabric material entering the nip being greater than the tension on the fabric material exiting the nip, and drying the web.

Method is disclosed of treatment of waste paper or the like at high temperatures in the range of 160.degree. C. to about 230.degree. C. The furnish is treated in a digester with or without added chemicals but in the presence of saturated steam. The preferred dwell times are in the range of about 1 minute to about 6 minutes. The treated furnish is then discharged from the digester, preferably, but not exclusively, by an explosive discharge. The advance in the art is in an improved de-inking effect, reduced consumption of chemicals and power. Also, some furnishes previously unsuitable for re-cycling, have been successfully processed by the method of the invention.

The wet wiper has an antimicrobially active non-woven web that includes: (i) bonded fibers; (ii) a binder in an amount effective to bind the fibers; and (iii) a first antimicrobial agent that is substantive to the fibers and to the binder when the web is either wet or dry. The web is maintained in a wet condition in a liquid containing a second antimicrobial agent until use.

The method includes the steps of forming an unbonded fibrous web; applying throughout the unbonded fibrous web an uncured polymeric binder; applying a leachable catalyst to catalyze the cross-linking of the binder during curing, the leachable catalyst being antimicrobial; and curing the binder to cross-link the binder and bind the fibers together to form an antimicrobially active, non-woven web.

A preferred antimicrobial agent is an organo-silicon quaternary ammonium salt, especially a 3-(trimethoxylsilyl) propyldidecylmethyl ammonium chloride or a 3-(trimethoxysilyl) proplyloctadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride.

The method includes the steps of forming an unbonded fibrous web; applying throughout the unbonded fibrous web an uncured binder and an antimicrobial agent, the antimicrobial active agent being substantive to the fibers of the web and to the binder; and curing the binder material to bind the fibers together to form an antimicrobially active, non-woven web. A method of improving absorbency of air laid bonded fibrous webs and the products resulting therefrom, the preferred method comprising the step of imprinting at least one surface of the fibrous web between a pair of cylindrical rolls under a pressure of at least 100 pounds/lineal inch, the compacted area of each imprinted web surface being at least 40%, preferably at least 50%, of the total imprinted surface. In the preferred embodiment of the method, the fibrous web is first wetted with water, the imprinting step then being conducted with imprinting means heated to about 140.degree. to about 180.degree. C. The products obtained have densified zones underlying the compacted areas, the density thereof being at least 0.1 gm./cc., which zones enhance absorbency as compared to unimprinted webs by at least 25%. The preferred webs provided by the method are imprinted with a grid-like pattern, said pattern preventing nesting of individual sheets in product rolls and containers.
