A first transceiver () can position itself by forming an ad hoc network () of transceivers which assist the first transceiver in acquiring its position. A dedicated infrastructure such as GPS satellites is not required. The first transceiver (), once it has acquired its position, can be involved in a network () by another transceiver () to assist in the positioning of that transceiver. The acquisition of the position may involve factors such as the trustworthiness of the transceivers in the network and/or the positions of transceivers with which the first transceiver cannot directly communicate.

Position acquisition

A method and apparatus for enhancing security in a wireless network using distance measurement techniques provides an additional layer of security and privacy in wireless communications. A distance measurement or location-finding is performed between two devices by transmitting and receiving one or more signals and computing a distance between the two devices or a location of a connecting device. The resulting computed distance or location is used to determine whether or not to permit pairing, secure connection or secure transactions between the two devices. The computed distance or location can be further used in combination with a signal strength measurement to link to locate and measure nearby devices first, reducing the time required to initialize network communications. Management software may be enhanced to facilitate connecting to desired devices by providing an indication of computed distance or location of each device, and a list may be generated in order of proximity, further facilitating connection to the desired devices. Set-up of wireless networks may automated by using a short distance to facilitate connection between nodes.

Method and apparatus for enhancing security in a wireless network using distance measurement techniques

There is described a system for configuring the functionality of anyone of a plurality of devices by transferring control information from a portable controller thereto. The portable controller comprises: an input for receiving control information for configuring each device; memory circuitry arranged to store and retrieve control information for configuring each one of said plurality of devices; and an output for transferring to a device retrieved control information for that device. Each of the devices comprises: a user interface through which the user controls the device, means for coupling wirelessly with the output of the portable controller to transfer retrieved control information therefrom and control means arranged to configure the device in dependence upon the transferred control information by changing at least one of the functions provided by the device.

A mobile telephone operated from a vehicle battery comprises an input line for providing a signal indicative of the ignition stage of the vehicle. The telephone has a menu facility for selecting an automatic answer mode. The telephone goes off-hook automatically after a predetermined interval if the automatic answer mode has been selected and the signal on input line (11) indicates that the ignition is turned on. An incoming call can thus be answered without the user having to physically touch the telephone. On the other hand the automatic answer mode is not enabled when the ignition is off, i.e when the telephone is more likely to be unattended.
