The present invention is directed to a novel polymerizable organic composition comprising one or more radically polymerizable monomers with at least one radically polymerizable monomer having at least two (meth)acryloyl groups that have backbone linkages selected from thiourethane linkages, dithiourethane linkages, combinations of thiourethane linkages and dithiourethane linkages. The present invention is also directed to polymerizates prepared from the polymerizable organic composition, shaped articles prepared from the polymerizable compositions, and photochromic articles that may be prepared from the polymerizable organic composition of the present invention.

Optical resin composition

The present invention is directed to a novel method of preparing a polymerizate, which includes the step of polymerizing a two-component composition, which includes: a first component containing at least one polycyanate reactant having at least two functional groups selected from isocyanate, isothiocyanate and combinations thereof, the polycyanate reactant being the reaction product of: a polythiol monomer having at least two thiol groups; and a polycyanate monomer having at least two functional groups selected from isocyanate, isothiocyanate and combinations thereof; and a second component containing at least one polyamine reactant having at least two functional groups selected from primary amine, secondary amine and combinations thereof. The molar equivalent ratio of (NCO+NCS) groups from the first component to (&#x2014;NH+&#x2014;NH&#x2014;) groups from the second component is from 0.5 to 100. The present invention is also directed to polymerizates prepared according to the method of the present invention. The present invention is further directed to photochromic articles that may be prepared from the polymerizates of the present invention.

Method of preparing an optical polymerizate

The present invention is directed to a novel method of preparing a polymerizate, which includes the step of polymerizing a two-component composition, which includes: a first component containing at least one polycyanate reactant having at least two functional groups selected from isocyanate, isothiocyanate and combinations thereof, the polycyanate reactant being the reaction product of: a polythiol monomer having at least two thiol groups; and a polycyanate monomer having at least two functional groups selected from isocyanate, isothiocyanate and combinations thereof; and a second component containing at least one polyamine reactant having at least two functional groups selected from primary amine, secondary amine and combinations thereof. The present invention is also directed to polymerizates prepared according to the method of the present invention. The present invention is further directed to photochromic articles that may be prepared from the polymerizates of the present invention.

Described is an article of a non-elastomeric poly(urea-urethane) substrate having free isocyanato surface groups and at least a partial coating of a photochromic polymeric coating on at least one surface of the substrate.

Photochromic coated high impact resistant articles

Described is a polymerizable organic composition comprising: (a) a radically polymerizable gel-free prepolymer of (i) at least one first polymerizable monomer having at least two radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups, e.g., divinyl benzene, and (ii) at least one first polythiol monomer having at least two thiol groups, e.g., thioglycerol bis(mercaptoacetate); and (b) at least one second polymerizable monomer having at least two radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups, e.g., divinyl benzene and/or methacrylic anhydride, the first and second radically polymerizable monomers each being substantially free of norbornene groups. The molar equivalent ratio of ethylenically unsaturated groups of (a)(i) to the thiol groups of (a)(ii) is no greater than 1:1. The described polymerizable composition has reduced shrinkage, and a polymerizate prepared therefrom has a refractive index of at least 1.57 and an Abbe number of at least 33.

Optical resin composition comprising thiol-ene prepolymer

Describes novel polyfunctional thiiranes. Also described are polymerizable compositions comprising such novel polyfunctional thiiranes, and polymerizates, e.g., optical lenses, prepared therefrom. The described polymerizates may have a refractive index of at least 1.6, and an Abbe number of at least 27.

Polyfunctional thiirane compounds

Described are photochromic organic resin compositions and the impact resistant polymerizates and coating compositions made therefrom. The organic resin composition comprises the reaction product of at least one polyol having greater than 1.0 hydroxyl groups; at least one polyisocyanate having greater than 1.0 isocyanato groups; and at least one polyamine curing agent having greater than 1.0 amino groups. The polymerizates are made photochromic either by the addition of organic photochromic compounds to the reactants used to form the polymerizate or by methods that imbibe or transfer the photochromic compounds into the polymerizate. Optically clear photochromic and impact resistant articles such as ophthalmic lenses and articles having photochromic coatings prepared from the photochromic organic resin compositions are also described.

Photochromic organic resin composition

This invention relates to a two layers or more anti-static film coating deposited on a substrate. Selected layers of the films may have anti-static and/or electromagnetic properties. In one embodiment, the film farthest from the substrate has an index of refraction lower than the underlying film. In another embodiment, the surface of the film is roughened to provide a graded index of refraction.

Polymerizable compositions comprising: (a) a mixture of thio(meth)acrylate functional monomers comprising, (a)(i) a first thio(meth)acrylate functional monomer, e.g., bis(thiomethacrylate)-1,2-ethylene, and (a)(ii) a second thio(meth)acrylate functional monomer, which is chain extended; (b) an aromatic monomer having at least two vinyl groups, e.g., divinyl benzene; (c) a polythiol monomer having at least two thiol groups, e.g., pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropionate); and (d) a comonomer selected from, (d)(i) an anhydride monomer having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group, e.g., methacrylic anhydride; (d) (ii) a monomer having at least three (meth)acryloyl groups, e.g., pentaerythritol tetrakis(acrylate); and (d)(iii) mixtures of monomers (d)(i) and (d)(ii). A polymerizate of the polymerizable composition has a refractive index of at least 1.57 and an Abbe number of at least 33.

High refractive index optical resin composition

Describes a polymerizable organic composition comprising a polyol(allyl carbonate), e.g., diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate), and from 0.1 percent to 10 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of an allyl ester terminated nonaromatic polyester, e.g., diallyl 4-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylate oligomer with 1,4-butane diol. Polymerizates prepared from polymerizable organic compositions of the present invention have a refractive index of less than 1.53, e.g., from 1.49 to 1.50, and are substantially free of defects due to tinting failure.

Polymerizable polyol(allyl carbonate) composition

Polyurethane foams prepared using polysiloxane/polyoxyalkylene surfactants, preferably blended with a viscosity modifying agent, particularly in combination with particulate silica, especially silica aerogel, exhibit improved thermal insulating capacity, as measured by K-factor, and improved closed cell content, without increasing the density of the polyurethane foam.

Describes a polymerizable organic composition comprising at least one polymerizable monomer having at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups, e.g., divinyl benzene, and a polythiol monomer represented by the following general formula, ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each selected from the group consisting of straight or branched chain alkylene, e.g., methylene or ethylene, cyclic alkylene, phenylene and C.sub.1 -C.sub.9 alkyl substituted phenylene. Polymerizates prepared from polymerizable organic compositions of the present invention have a refractive index of at least 1.57, an Abbe number of at least 33 and an initial Barcol hardness of at least 1. Also described are photochromic articles prepared from such compositions.

A polymerizable, liquid, substantially gel-free composition comprising a partially polymerized mixture of ethylenically unsaturated compounds wherein: (a) the mixture of ethylenically unsaturated compounds which was partially polymerized comprised a mixture of diethylene glycol (allyl carbonate) compounds each represented by Formula I: ##STR1## in which n is a positive integer, m is a positive integer, and the diethylene glycol (allyl carbonate) compound for which the value of n is 1 constituted from 25 to 75 area percent of the mixture of diethylene glycol (allyl carbonate) compounds; and (b) the ethylenic double bond utilization of the polymerizable, liquid, substantially gel-free composition is at least 3 percent. The polymerizable, liquid, substantially gel-free composition exhibits low shrinkage in the mold when polymerized.

Described is a polymerizable organic composition comprising at least one capped polyisocyanate having nonfugitive capping groups, e.g., a 1H-azole, a polythiol having two or more thiol groups, and optionally a reactive hydrogen compound selected from polyols, compounds having both hydroxy and thiol groups, and mixtures thereof. A polymerizate, having a thickness of at least 0.5 millimeters, e.g., an optical lens, obtained from the composition of the present invention has an initial Barcol hardness of at least 1, a refractive index of at least 1.57 and an Abbe number of at least 33. Also described are photochromic articles prepared from such polymerizates.

One-component optical resin composition

Describes a method of preparing a polymerizate by polymerizing a two-component organic composition comprising: a first component containing a polyfunctional reactant having two or more functional groups selected from isocyanate, isothiocyanate and combinations of isocyanate and isothiocyanate groups; and a second component containing a polythiol represented by the following general formula I, ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each selected from the group consisting of straight or branched chain alkylene, e.g., methylene and ethylene, cyclic alkylene, phenylene and C.sub.1 -C.sub.9 alkyl substituted phenylene. The second component may also optionally contain a reactive hydrogen compound that is different than the polythiol of general formula I. Polymerizates prepared according to the present invention are useful as ophthalmic lenses and have a refractive index of at least 1.57, an Abbe number of at least 33 and an initial Barcol hardness of at least 1. Also described are photochromic articles prepared from such polymerizates.
