Various embodiments include a method for monitoring the ventilation of a crankcase of an internal combustion engine with combustion chambers and a nitrogen oxide sensor arranged in an exhaust system, the sensor configured to detect an amount of nitrogen oxide in exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. An example method includes: determining a predefined operating mode of the internal combustion engine defined by substantially no combustion of an air/fuel mixture taking place inside the combustion chambers; determining an amount of nitrogen oxide in the exhaust gas during the predefined operating mode of the internal combustion engine using the exhaust gas sensor; and identifying functional ventilation of the crankcase if the detected nitrogen oxide level exceeds a predefined nitrogen oxide threshold or identifying a malfunction if the detected nitrogen oxide level is below the predefined nitrogen oxide threshold.

Various embodiments include a method for checking a sensor for soot particles in exhaust of an engine comprising: generating a sensor current between a first electrode and a second electrode of the sensor, wherein the first electrode and the second electrode define a gap through which the exhaust gas flows between the electrodes, by applying a difference in potential between the electrodes, wherein soot particles accumulate on the electrodes and, after a dwell time dependent on the preloading of the electrodes with soot particles, they move from a first electrode to the respective second electrode generating a flow of current as a measure of the quantity of soot in the stream of exhaust gas; determining whether a peak in the sensor current is measured after the switching off of the internal combustion engine; and if no peak in the sensor current is measured, flagging the particle sensor as faulty.

The present disclosure relates to engines for a motor vehicle and some embodiments include a method for operating an exhaust train of a motor vehicle engine including: measuring a particle concentration downstream of a particle filter at a first operating point; determining the filter efficiency at the first operating point; changing operation of the engine to a second operating point to increase the particle emissions; measuring the particle concentration downstream of the filter at the second operating point; determining the filter efficiency at the second operating point; determining a difference between the efficiency levels; detecting an offset error, if the difference exceeds a defined threshold; and identifying a particle sensor as defective if an offset error is detected, rather than identifying the particle filter as defective.

Exhaust system for a motor vehicle

A method for checking the leak-tightness of hydraulic components in an exhaust gas aftertreament unit of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust gas aftertreament unit uses an electric motor to pump a liquid reductant from a reductant reservoir to a reductant injector that is kept closed. The reductant pump is switched on for a first predetermined period, and the electric current consumed by the electric motor is detected during this period. After a predetermined standstill time has passed, the reductant pump is switched on again for a second period identical to the first period, and the electric current consumed by the electric motor is again detected during this period. The electric currents detected during the two time periods are compared with each other, and the leak-tightness of the hydraulic components downstream of the reductant pump is evaluated based on the result of the comparison.

Method and device for checking the hydraulic leak-tightness in an exhaust gas aftertreatment system for a motor vehicle

A method is disclosed for operating an exhaust gas catalytic converter designed to reduce nitrogen oxides in an exhaust gas flow using a solution that contains urea and that reacts to form at least ammonia in the exhaust gas flow. The method may include: introducing an amount of the solution containing urea upstream of the exhaust gas catalytic converter until an ammonia slip through the exhaust gas catalytic converter; determining a first actual value of the loading state of the catalytic converter with ammonia at the time of the slip; determining a first estimated value of the loading state at the time of the slip by means of a dynamic model for the loading; subsequently draining the ammonia from the catalytic converter; determining a second actual value of the loading state of the exhaust gas catalytic converter with the solution containing urea when the catalytic converter is drained as specified.

A method for correcting the injection duration of injections is based on pressure fluctuations of preceding injections. The injection duration is determined on the basis of a mapping value and of a correction value. The mapping value is read out from a mapping according to the fuel pressure and according to the amount of fuel to be injected. The correction value is calculated according to the time interval between the subsequent injection and at least one latter injection. This enables a precise determination of the injection duration and thus a precise metering of the desired amount of fuel.
