A rollover protection system for motor vehicles with a roll bar, which can be moved by a drive unit from a position of rest to a protection position, is secured in the protection position by a locking device and prevented from retracting, and is fixed in the position of rest by a holding device, wherein the holding device has a movably arranged catch element which can be disengaged abruptly by a pyrotechnic actuator. For such cases in which the catch element can move beyond the release point and there is a danger of a rebounding, because a path-limiting stop is present, a structural part is provided that prevents a return movement of the catch element into the holding position.

Vehicle rollover protection system with a roll bar, whose top piece is rounded in a U-shape. Such top pieces are typically tubular and are made from pipe bending parts. In order to achieve a three-dimensional contour of the top piece with irregular cross section of its profile, the invention calls for at least the tubular top piece consisting of at least two axially divided partially tubular shells of sheet metal, joined to each other and having different geometrical shapes according to a nominal contour.

Such systems typically have an extendable rollover bar, which in its extended position is locked against being pushed back in by a locking pawl that is in operative locking engagement with a toothed segment. To make it possible by simple means to use both hands to return the rollover bar to its retracted position when required, the invention provides a reversing lever, which can be manually brought to a self-holding position above dead center while unlocking the locking pawl before the rollover bar is pushed in. This self-holding position can be automatically canceled again just before the rollover bar reaches its standby position.

A roll bar protection system for motor vehicles comprising an outer box profile forming a case for the components of the roll bar protection system, being mounted firmly on the vehicle, an inner box profile, able to move in the outer box profile via guide elements which is designed as a roll bar and accommodates a fast drive for its extension into the upper end protection position in event of danger, and a drive arrangement for a continuous movement of the inner box profile, consisting of an electric motor/gearing arrangement with a threaded spindle of predetermined length, as well as a tie-bar which can be moved in the outer box profile, having a nut for engagement with the threaded spindle, and which is detachably connected to the inner box profile.
