An apparatus for cooling a hot product gas, the latter is passed through a tubular zone. The product gas contains particles which, on entering the tubular zone, are tacky, but lose their tackiness through cooling in said zone. Within said zone a cooling gas flow forms a gas wall, which prevents contact between the product gas or the tacky particles contained therein, and one of the fixed walls in the tubular zone. Thus within an outlet connection (2) forming the tubular zone is provided an anular insert (3), which forms a gap (4) with the outlet connection. A cooling gas is blown into this gap counter to the flow direction of the product gas. At the end of the insert, this cooling gas is deflected by the product gas and flows within the insert in the same direction as the product gas and protects the inner wall of the insert from the latter. This product gas is cooled to such an extent by the action of the cooling gas that the particles in the product gas have lost their tackiness at the outlet-side end of the insert.

A process and an arrangement for the production of molten pig iron or steel pre-products from particulate ferrous material as well as for the production of reducing gas in a meltdown gasifier. A fluidized bed of coke particles is formed by the addition of coal and the injection of oxygen-containing gas. In order to ensure a satisfactory mode of operation of the meltdown gasifier even if coal of inferior quality with a high moisture content and a high portion of volatile matter is used, additional heat is supplied to the meltdown gasifier above the feed lines for the fluidized-bed-forming oxygen-containing gas by burning and/or degassing coal particles separated from the reducing gas.

Apparatus for charging a shaft furnace for burning carbonaceous mineral material in at least two furnace shafts comprises a common feed container, which is connected to each furnace shaft by a separate charging duct. In order to provide a simple structure and to reduce the overall height, the feed container is designed to constitute a lock chamber, which is provided with a shut-off valve for controlling the inlet port of the feed container and with a plurality of shut-off valves for controlling respective outlet ports connected to the charging ducts.

In the case of an arrangement comprising a gasifier and a direct reduction shaft furnace positioned above it and which is connected to the gasifier by a connecting shaft, the direct introduction of the reduction gas obtained in the gasifier, even in the case of a high dust proportion, is made possible in that the sponge iron particles are discharged through several radially positioned screw conveyors and the reduction gas is fed to an annular zone formed above the screw conveyors.

A process and a device are described for directly making liquid pig-iron from coarse iron ore. Hot sponge-iron particles are directly conveyed by a worm conveyor (17) through a communicating passage (19) from a direct-reduction blast-furnace shaft (2) into a smelter-gasifier (1), and a stream (24) of gas flows, after cooling to below 950.degree. C., in counter-current to the sponge-iron particles, from the smelter-gasifier (1) to the blast-furnace shaft (2), this gas stream having a volumetric flow-rate not more than 30 percent of the total reduction-gas flow reaching the blast-furnace shaft (FIG. 1).
