Forming a unique stochastically branching pattern includes providing a first fluid between a surface of a first substrate and a surface of a second substrate and introducing a second fluid between the surface of the first substrate and the surface of the second substrate. The second fluid is in direct contact with the first fluid at a formation temperature, and a viscosity of the first fluid at the formation temperature exceeds a viscosity of the second fluid at the formation temperature. The first substrate and the second substrate are separated to yield a unique stochastically branching pattern comprising the first fluid on the surface of the first substrate.

Programmable interposers for connecting integrated circuits, methods for programming programmable interposers, and integrated circuit packaging are provided. The programmable interposers are electrically reconfigurable to allow custom system-in-package (SiP) operation and configuration, field configurability, and functional obfuscation for secure integrated circuits fabricated in non-trusted environments. The programmable interposer includes, in one implementation, an interposer substrate and a programmable metallization cell (PMC) switch. The PMC switch is formed on the interposer substrate and is coupled between a signal input and a signal output. The PMC switch is electrically configurable between a high resistance state and a low resistance state.

Programmable interposers for electrically connecting integrated circuits

Systems for physical unclonable function ('PUF') generation, PUF devices, and methods for manufacturing PUF devices. In one implementation, the system includes a plurality of PUF devices and an electronic controller. Each of the plurality of PUF devices include a first electrochemically-inactive electrode, a second electrochemically-inactive electrode, and a layer of silicon suboxide. The layer of silicon suboxide is positioned directly between the first electrochemically-inactive electrode and the second electrochemically-inactive electrode. The electronic controller is communicably coupled to the plurality of PUF devices. The electronic controller is configured to read binary values associated with the plurality of PUF devices.

The low-voltage microfluidic valve device also includes a microfluidic channel configured to allow fluid flow, wherein the fluid flow is selectively interrupted by the growth of the nano-textured dendritic metallic filament. The low-voltage microfluidic valve device also includes a membrane positioned proximate to the fluid and configured to alter shape in response to the growth of the nano-textured dendritic metallic filament.

The disclosure features methods and systems that include illuminating a candidate structure with radiation linearly polarized along a first polarization direction and obtaining a first image of the dendritic structure, illuminating the candidate structure with radiation linearly polarized along a second polarization direction and obtaining a second image of the dendritic structure, where an angle between the first and second polarization directions is at least 10, for a set of pixels corresponding to a first region of the candidate structure in the first and second images, determining a first change in average pixel intensity between the first and second images, and authenticating the candidate structure as a dendritic structure based on the first change in average pixel intensity.

Dendritic structures and tags

Systems and methods are presented for a timing device. The timing device includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and an electrolyte. The electrolyte includes a material selected such that an electrodeposit forms on the first electrode when a current is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode. A measurable electrical characteristic of the timing device is indicative of a time-dependent degree of growth of the electrodeposit between the first electrode and the second electrode.
