An apparatus for shipping or storage of Li-ion batteries comprises a sealable outer bag fabricated from heat-resistant, permeable fabric, a first flexible thermal runaway shield ('TRS') fabricated from low-permeability film configured to line a first inside surface of the outer bag, a second flexible TRS fabricated from low-permeability film configured to line a second inside surface of the outer bag, and at least one Li-ion battery configured to be disposed between the first flexible TRS and the second TRS of the sealable outer bag to provide a sealed outer bag.

Thermal runaway shield for shipping battery packs/cells

A thermal runaway protection system for serially-connected battery cells, comprises a flexible thermal runaway shield ('TRS') and a channel separator. The flexible TRS is configured to be disposed around the serially-connected battery cells. The channel separator is configured to be disposed at a positive cap of one of the serially-connected battery cells. The channel separator comprises a body and a via configured to electrically connect two sides of the channel separator. The body has a raised outer ring with a gap for venting gas during thermal runaway. The raised outer ring is configured to be in contact with the positive cap. The flexible TRS has an opening aligned to the gap of the outer ring.

Thermal runaway shield

A thermal electrical (TE) interface comprises a primary fiber thermal interface (FTI) having a first side configured to contact a heatsink, and a second side. The primary fiber thermal interface has a thickness ranging from 0.3 mm to 4 mm. A secondary fiber thermal interface (FTI) has a first side configured to contact the second side of the primary FTI, a second side configured to contact circuit components to dissipate heat from the circuit components through the first side of the primary FTI. The secondary fiber thermal interface has a thickness equal to or greater than the primary FTI.

Method and apparatus of operating a compressible thermal interface

A thermal runaway shield ('TRS') having at least one TRS module. The TRS module comprises a first wall, a second wall, and fibers. The first wall has an exterior side and an interior side. The second wall has an exterior side and an interior side. The fibers are disposed on the interior side of the first wall and on the interior side of the second wall. The first wall is coupled to the second wall forming an inner cavity. The at least one of the exterior side of the first wall and the exterior side of the second wall has a shape for conforming to a shape of at least one energy storage device cell.

A battery protection system comprises sleeves, carbon fibers, a case, and liquid. The sleeves are hollow for insertion of battery cells. The carbon fibers are disposed on outer surfaces of the sleeves. The case houses the sleeves and has an inner cavity. The liquid and the carbon fibers are disposed in the inner cavity, where the carbon fibers are exposed to the liquid.
