A transgenic plant is prepared by a method in which a plant cell is transformed with a chimaeric gene comprising a promoter and a gene encoding a polypeptide which displays the activity of an enzyme which regulates the amount of a metabolic intermediate in glycolysis or in a pathway for the synthesis or degradation of starch, sucrose or reducing sugar from a glycolytic intermediate.

Modification of plant metabolism

The invention relates to the isolation and characterisation of novel expansin gene sequences from heterologous and homologous tree species and re-introducing such novel genes into trees so as to alter expansin levels. Six novel genes have been identified.has also been transformed using the cucumber EX29 sequence (GenBank, Accession No. U30382-known as Cs-EXP1) (SEQ. ID. NO: 9). A change in the plant height and internode length was observed compared with control plants.

Modification of plant fibers

Transgenic potato plants are prepared by a method which transforms potato plants with a chimeric gene comprising a promoter and sequence encoding a phosphofructose kinase, which regulates the amount of a metabolite in a pathway for the synthesis or degradation of starch, sucrose or reducing sugar. In stored transgenic potato tubers of the invention an increased level of phosphofructose kinase results in reduced accumulation of sugars.

Method for altering carbohydrate metabolite levels in stored potato tubers

The present invention relates to a transgenic plant which comprises a recombinant gene encoding one of the subunit proteins of adenosine diphosphoglucose pyrophosphorylase (&ldquo;ADPG PPase&rdquo;). In plants, functional ADPG PPase holoenzyme is a heterotetrameric protein composed of two subunits, each encoded by a different gene. The present invention shows that the activity of ADPG PPase in the cell of plants can be increased by expressing only one of the two subunit proteins required to make an active enzyme.

Modification of starch content in plants

Starch of wheat and maize plants is altered by the introduction of a chimeric gene comprising a glycogen synthase coding sequence under the control of a promoter directing expression and a terminator. A transit peptide for translocation of the glycogen synthase to the plant plastid may also be included in the chimeric gene. The starch has altered processing characteristics, in particular an increased chain length.

Genetically modified plants with altered starch

A sequence from the gene encoding for reduced sugar production is used, in sense or antisense orientation to transform potato such that less sugar is stored in the tubers of the transformed plant.

Modification of sucrose accumulation in the tubers of potatoes

A process is provided whereby the constitution of starch produced in a plant is altered without there being a substantial change in the total amount of starch which is produced. In the process a plant cell is transformed using a chimaeric gene comprising an antisense coding sequence from the waxy locus of a plant genome or an antisense similar coding sequence from a non-plant genome.
