A gyroscope and method for navigating using the gyroscope can include a substrate that can define a cavity. The cavity can be placed under a vacuum, and a birefringent microrotor can be located in the cavity. A light source can direct light through the substrate and into the cavity to establish an optical spring effect, which act on the microrotor to establish an initial reference position, as well as to establish rotational and translational motion of said microrotor. A receiver can detect light that has passed through said cavity. Changes in light patterns that can be detected at the receiver can be indicative of a change in position of the microrotor. The change and rate of change in position of the microrotor can be used for inertial navigation.

A method of minimizing cross-talk between optical modes propagating in a multi-mode optical fiber, comprises superimposing a plurality of optical wavefunctions; determining a relationship between superpositions of at least some of the optical wavefunctions and at least one measure of orthogonality of the optical modes at an output of the multi-mode optical fiber; and identifying a superposition of at least some of the optical wavefunctions that provides a desired or optimized value of the at least one measure of orthogonality using the determined relationship. The method further comprises generating, using light from a laser and at least one optical component, the identified superposition of at least some of the optical wavefunctions that provides the desired or optimized value of the at least one measure of orthogonality.

Minimization of cross-talk in a multi-mode fiber

A method of optimising at least one measure that is a quadratic function of a wavefunction, such as the spot size of a laser, the method comprising: superimposing a plurality of wavefunctions; determining a relationship between the superimposed wavefunctions and the quadratic measure, and using the determined relationship to identify the superimposed wavefunctions that provide a desired or optimised quadratic measure.

A Raman spectrometer comprising means for illuminating a sample with a shaped laser beam and a detector that is operable to detect light that is reflected from or transmitted through a sample. Preferably, the shaped laser beam has a dark spot at its center.
