In one example, a controller is configured to respond to a sensed exhaust oxygen concentration by changing a fuel injection timing to maintain particulate matter (PM) within a range, and then adjusting an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) amount based on NOx sensor output and based on the change in fuel injection timing.

As one example, a system includes an engine coupled to a low pressure turbocharger and a high pressure turbocharger; and a controller with non-transitory instructions stored in memory that when executed during operation of the engine cause the controller to: indicate an occurrence of surge of the high pressure turbocharger in response to a deviation of a modeled speed of the high pressure turbocharger from a measured speed of the high pressure turbocharger by a threshold amount, where the modeled speed tracks the measured speed during non-surge conditions, as engine operating conditions change.

Various methods and systems are provided for indexing an injector map and subsequently controlling fuel injection to an engine. In one embodiment, a method for the engine includes injecting fuel via activating an injector for a determined activation time, the activation time determined based on a commanded fuel value and a function of a modified pressure difference across an orifice of a nozzle of the injector, where the modified pressure difference is based on a difference between a rail pressure and peak cylinder pressure, the peak cylinder pressure scaled by a function of engine speed and injection timing and the pressure difference offset by a correction factor.
