A controller and controlling method is disclosed for a boost converter. The controller includes a first node for receiving an output sense signal indicative of an output DC voltage, a second node for receiving a boost current sense signal indicative of current through an inductor of the boost converter, a first combiner which provides an error signal based on a difference between the output sense signal and a reference signal, an integrator which integrates the error signal and which provides a compensation signal indicative thereof, and a pulse controller which provides a pulse control signal for controlling the power switch to operate the boost converter in DCM. The pulse controller develops pulse control signal based on comparing the compensation signal with a ramp signal and further adjusts the pulse control signal over a cycle of a rectified AC input voltage based on the boost current sense signal.

System and method of feed forward for boost converters with improved power factor and reduced energy storage

A converter according to one embodiment converts an AC voltage to a regulated output current provided to a DC load of a Z-type configuration. A filter capacitor is provided to average current flowing through the load. The converter includes a rectifier network for rectifying the AC voltage and for providing a rectified voltage, and a smoothing capacitor for smoothing the rectified voltage. The converter includes a hysteretic current mode controller which controls a switching transistor based on sensed voltage and sensed current provided through an inductor coupled in series with the load. The transistor is turned on when current reaches a low valley level and is turned off when the current reaches a peak level. Operation toggles in this manner while a sensed voltage is above a predetermined level. A valley fill network may be provided to keep sensed voltage from falling below the predetermined minimum level.

System and method for converting an AC input voltage to regulated output current

A DC/DC converter has an output voltage and sources an output current to a load. The DC/DC converter includes an error amplifier with a reference input and a summing input. The reference input is electrically connected to a reference voltage. The summing input is electrically connected to the output voltage and the output current. The summing input is configured for adding together the output voltage and the output current. The error amplifier issues an error signal and adjusts the error signal dependent at least in part upon the output voltage and the output current. A comparator receives the error signal. The comparator has a ramp input electrically connected to a voltage ramp signal. The comparator issues an output signal that is based at least in part upon said error input. A power switch has an on condition and an off condition, and supplies dc current to the load when in the on condition. The power switch has a control input electrically connected to the comparator output signal. The power switch is responsive to the control input to change between the on condition and the off condition to thereby adjust the output current of the DC/DC converter.

Current mode DC/DC converter with controlled output impedance

An AC to DC converter for converting an AC input voltage to a regulated DC output voltage using a Z-type converter and rectified switches. The Z-type converter includes first and second inductors, a capacitor, two rectified switches and a load device coupled in a cross-coupled configuration. The Z-type converter may be configured according to a Z-source or a quasi-Z-source rectifier network. The AC input voltage is applied to an input and the DC output voltage is developed across the load device. Each rectified switch may be configured as a series-coupled diode and electronic switch or as a dual gate GaN device with a shorted gate. A control network monitors the DC output voltage and develops a control signal for controlling the first and second rectified switches to regulate the DC output voltage. The control network may control the rectified switches based on duty cycle control or current mode control.

System and method for converting an AC input voltage to a regulated DC output voltage using a Z-type converter with rectified switches

A converter system including a cascade boost converter and inverting buck converter and controller for converting a rectified AC voltage to a DC output current. The system uses inductors and is configured to use a common reference voltage. The controller is configured to control switching of the converters in an independent manner to decouple operation from each other. For example, control pulses for the boost converter may be wider than pulses for the buck converter. The controller may control the boost converter based on constant on-time control and may control the inverting buck converter based on peak current control. The rectified AC voltage may be an AC conductive angle modulated voltage, where the controller may inhibit switching of the inverted buck converter at a dimming frequency having a duty cycle based on a phase angle of the AC conductive angle modulated voltage.

Cascade boost and inverting buck converter with independent control

A non-inverting buck boost voltage converter includes a buck boost voltage regulation circuitry for generating a regulated output voltage responsive to an input voltage. A current sensor monitors an input current to the buck boost voltage regulation circuitry. Buck boost mode control circuitry controls the buck boost voltage regulation circuitry using peak current mode control in a buck mode of operation and valley current mode control in boost mode of operation responsive to the monitored input current.

Non-inverting buck boost voltage converter

A charge circuit for providing a gate driver supply voltage for a gate driver of a switching power supply in accordance with an embodiment of the present application includes a first voltage source providing a first voltage and a charge pump circuit connected to the first voltage source and operable to be turned ON and OFF to improve efficiency such that an increased output voltage of the charge circuit is provided when the charge pump circuit is ON, and wherein the output voltage is the gate driver supply voltage.

Charge circuit for optimizing gate voltage for improved efficiency

A synthetic ripple regulator including a synthetic ripple voltage generator that generates a synthetic ripple voltage indicative of the ripple current through an output inductor. The regulator uses the synthetically generated ripple voltage to control toggling of a hysteretic comparator for developing the pulse width modulation (PWM) signal that controls switching of the regulator. In a non-limiting implementation, a transconductance amplifier monitors the phase node voltage of the inductor and supplies an inductor voltage-representative current to a ripple capacitor, which produces the synthetic ripple voltage. Using the replicated inductor current for ripple regulation results in low output ripple, input voltage feed forward, and simplified compensation.
