An electromagnetically shielded or reflecting device having a film of shielding or reflecting material and a device for obtaining, in a dielectric material volume, selective propagation of electromagnetic radiation in predetermined frequency band. The shielding or reflecting material includes a polymer, and electrically conducting particles substantially randomly dispersed in the polymer The film is used in shielding objects against electromagnetic radiation across a range of frequencies, The device for obtaining, in a dielectric material volume, selective propagation of electromagnetic radiation in predetermined frequency band includes a dielectric material volume extending from a first surface to a second surface, a first number of cavities, a second number of cavities, each cavity from the first and second numbers extending from the first surface to the second surface, the cavities being substantially randomly distributes on the first or second surface and being filed with an electrically conducting material.

A linear array fiber-optic temperature sensor based upon fluorescence-decay technology allows for optical cabling to employ multiple, individually optically addressed optical fibers with sensing tips located in a single sensing tube. The sensing tips are arranged with a pre-determined, fixed relative spacing to form a linear array of temperature measurement points. Multiple such linear array sensors may be further arranged.

A variable interval electromagnetic pulse train generator having a semiconductor substrate on which is mounted on one surface thereof a plurality of spaced apart electrodes and on another surface thereof an electrode base plate. A voltage source is connected to each of the plurality of spaced apart electrodes while the space between electrodes have optical pulses directed thereon. By controlling the voltage applied to the electrodes and the optical pulses directed between electrodes the pulse train generator is capable of emitting a series of variable, spaced apart electromagnetic pulses.

A fiber-optic system for measuring a desired environmental parameter, such as temperature, is disclosed. The system includes a fiber-optic sensing head that alters light of a prescribed frequency as a function of the environmental parameter to be measured. Light not of the prescribed frequency is not so altered. In a preferred embodiment of the fiber-optic sensing head, a semiconductor material is positioned between two substantially parallel optical fibers at a distal end of the fibers. One fiber serves as in input channel and the other fiber serves as an output channel. Both fibers approach the semiconductor material from the same direction. Light channeled to the semiconductor material is reflected at the distal end of the input fiber so as to pass through the semiconductor material, and then is reflected again at the distal end of the output fiber so as to pass back out the output fiber. The semiconductor material absorbs the light of the prescribed frequency as a function of temperature. By monitoring the intensity of the light of the first frequency at the output channel, a measurement of the temperature to which the fiber-optic sensing head is subjected can be determined. To remove the influence of input light intensities, fiber attenuation, and the like, from the temperature measurement, lights of two frequencies, only one of which is the prescribed frequency, are selectively directed to an optical detector through the fiber-optic sensing head and through a separate fiber-optic reference channel. The four measurements thus obtained at the optical detector--prescribed frequency through sensing head, prescribed frequency through reference channel, non-prescribed frequency through sensing head, and non-prescribed frequency through reference channel--are appropriately processed in order to generate a signal that has all variations or influences removed therefrom except the temperature variations of the sensing head.

A distortion free fiber optic system having a single-mode optical fiber utilized in combination with a semiconductor material mounted in optical alignment therewith. Although it is preferable for the semiconductor material to be adjacent the input end of the fiber, it may, in the alternative, be placed adjacent the output end of the fiber. For appropriate distortion free propagation of a beam of electromagnetic radiation through the optical fiber, the semiconductor material must be receptive to the wavelength of the electromagnetic beam. This can be accomplished by either matching the semiconductor material to the wavelength of the beam or tuning the source of the electromagnetic beam to the excitonic-polariton resonance of the semiconductor crystal.

Distortion free fiber optic system

An optically pumped semiconductor ring laser having a plurality of reflective elements optically aligned with one another to form a ring-shaped resonant cavity. A semiconductor lasing medium is mounted within the ring-shaped resonant cavity by a transparent, heat conductive mount located within a vacuum/cooling chamber of the type which allows the passage of a laser beam therethrough. A pump beam initiates a lasing action within the ring-shaped resonant cavity to produce said laser beam and said laser beam exits the resonant cavity as a pair of outputs. An alternate embodiment of the above described semiconductor ring laser provides a semblance of unidirectional lasing operation.
