The present invention is an improved method for preparing a heterogeneous, supported hydrogenation catalyst that comprises a Group VIII A metal and a catalyst support (for example, SiO, with either a hydrophilic or a hydrophobic surface) via aqueous deposition precipitation as well as the catalyst prepared by said method.

A supported catalyst and process for dehydrogenating a hydrocarbon, the catalyst comprising a first component selected from the group consisting of tin, germanium, lead, indium, gallium, thallium, and compounds thereof; a second component selected from the group consisting of metals of Group 8 of the Periodic Table of the Elements and compounds thereof, and a support comprising alumina in the gamma crystalline form. The catalysts are especially active and efficient when employed in concurrent flow in a dehydrogenation reactor having an average contact time between the hydrocarbon and catalyst of from 0.5 to 10 seconds.

This invention is a process for producing vinyl chloride from an ethylene-containing feed, oxygen, and a chlorine source in the presence of a catalyst. The process permits direct production of vinyl chloride in a single reactor system, and further permits ethane to be used as the Chydrocarbon feed with recycle of ethylene from the product stream to constitute the ethylene specified for the feed. This invention in another aspect concerns also a composition of matter, and a method for making the composition, wherein the composition is useful as a catalyst for the vinyl chloride process. The composition comprises a rare earth-containing material, with the proviso that the catalyst prepared therefrom is substantially free of iron and copper and with the further proviso that when cerium is present the catalyst further comprises at least one more rare earth element other than cerium.

The process comprises transalkylating a monocyclic aromatic compound with a mixture of dialkyl- and trialkyl-benzenes in the presence of an acidic mordenite zeolite under conditions such that monoalkylbenzene and predominantly 1,3,5-trialkylbenzene are formed. 1,3,5-trialkylbenzene is isolated in pure form from a mixture of the same and 1,2,4- and/or 1,2,3-trialkylbenzene by use of a dealuminated zeolite Y adsorbent.

A second process for the cyclodimerization of 1,3-butadienes to 4-vinylcyclohexenes comprising contacting a butadiene with a catalytic amount of a copper(I)-impregnated aluminosilicate zeolite characterized by a bulk SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 molar ratio in the range from about 5 to about 50 and a framework SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 molar ratio of at least about 15. A catalyst composition comprising a copper(I)-impregnated zeolite of specified bulk and framework silica to alumina molar ratios and specified water content. The catalyst exhibits high activity and long lifetime in the aforementioned dimerization processes and is easily regenerated.

A process of separating the ortho, meta and para isomers of ethyltoluene. One aspect employs a ferrierite absorbent which separates the para isomer from a mixture of the same and at least one of the meta and ortho isomers. A second aspect employs a silicalite absorbent which separates the ortho isomer from a mixture of the same and the meta isomer. A third aspect combines the ferrierite and silicalite absorbents in sequence to separate a mixture of the ortho, meta and para isomers into the essentially pure compounds.
