A filter mask for use in a flow cytometer includes light blocking features and light passing apertures. The flow cytometer operates to evaluate one or more characteristics of a sample by illuminating the sample and a carrier fluid and collecting light rays that are radiated from the sample and the carrier fluid. The light rays are passed through the filter mask. The light blocking features of the filter mask are arranged to selectively block radiated light at certain radiation angles, while permit light rays having other radiation angles to pass therethrough. A sensor analyzer receives the light rays that pass through to evaluate at least one characteristic of the sample. The light rays can also be separated into two beams, which can be independently filtered using different filter masks. The results can then be compared to provide even more information regarding characteristics of the sample.

Radiated light filtering for a flow cytometer

A flow cytometer includes a flow nozzle, a light source, an optics system, and a sensor analyzer. The flow nozzle provides a fluid along a flow path. The light source generates a light beam that illuminates the fluid. The optics system collects light rays that are radiated from the light beam by the fluid and passes or blocks the light rays based at least in part on the radiation angles associated with the light rays.

A method and apparatus for detecting pathogens and particles in a fluid in which particle size and intrinsic fluorescence of a simple particle is determined.

Pathogen detection by simultaneous size/fluorescence measurement

A particle detector has a sample area of cross section no in excess of about 2 mm for containing environmental fluid, a light source on one side of the sample area for directing a collimated or nearly collimated beam of light through the sample air or water so that part of the light beam will be scattered by any particles present in the air or water while the remainder remains unscattered, and a beam diverting device on the opposite side of the sample area for diverting or blocking at least the unscattered portion of the beam of light and directing at least part of the scattered light onto a detector. The detector produces output pulses in which each pulse has a height proportional to particle size and a pulse height discriminator obtains the size distribution of airborne particles detected in the air or water sample at a given time from the detector output. The detector may also include a device for discriminating between biological agents and inorganic particles.

Pathogen and particle detector system and method

The system includes an excitation source for providing a beam of electromagnetic radiation having a source wavelength. A first wavelength selective device is positioned to be impinged by the beam of electromagnetic radiation. The first wavelength selective device is constructed to transmit at least a portion of any radiation having the source wavelength and to reflect radiation of other wavelengths. A medium containing particles is positioned to be impinged by the beam of electromagnetic radiation. At least a portion of the beam of electromagnetic radiation becomes scattered within the medium, the scattered electromagnetic radiation including forward scattered electromagnetic radiation and backward scattered electromagnetic radiation. An optical detector is positioned to receive backward and/or forward scattered electromagnetic radiation.

The system includes a generally broadband, low coherence length light source that injects light into a fiber beamsplitter that is used to generate counterpropagating light beams in a Sagnac loop. The loop includes two facing fiber beamsplitters connected together at differing length inner legs, with one of the output legs of the second beamsplitter usually being connected to a in place optical fiber that ends with a phase modulator followed by a mirror. Formatted data is transmitted by impressing relative phase differences between the counterpropagating light beams. Optimum performance depends on appropriate choices for critical lengths in the system.

The system includes a generally broadband, low coherence length light source that injects light into a fiber beamsplitter that is used to generate counterpropagating light beams in a Sagnac loop. The loop includes two facing fiber beamsplitters connected together at differing length inner legs, with one of the output legs of the second beamsplitter usually being connected to an optical fiber that ends with a phase modulator followed by a mirror. Environmental effects at the optical fiber impress relative phase differences between the counterpropagating light beams, which are detected from an interferometric signal that results therefrom.
