An electrically conductive shaped article such as a film or fibrous material and a process for preparing the same from a polybenzimidazole shaped article is provided. The polybenzimidazole article is first contacted with cuprous ions to produce a cuprous ion-impregnated material, and subsequently is subjected to a sulfiding agent capable of sulfiding cuprous ions, and preferably washed, to produce a polybenzimidazole shaped article having covellite copper sulfide in association therewith. Also provided are electrically conductive composites and a process for preparing the same by incorporating fibrous material prepared in accordance with the process within a substantially continuous polymeric matrix.

An electrically conductive fibrous material and a process for preparing the same from a thermally stabilized acrylic fibrous material are provided. The present invention provides a protective garment fabric material for enhanced personal protection against harmful substances present in the ambient atmosphere. This fabric is manufactured from microporous hollow fibers containing neutralization agents capable of detoxifying chemical or biological agents in the lumina of the fibers. The protective fabrics of the present invention possess enhanced mechanical strength, high efficiency, and at the same time provide a larger concentration of detoxicant per surface area than the protective fabrics of the prior art.

An improved polyester filament (i.e., a principally polyethylene terephthalate filament) suitable for use in commercial applications is provided having a unique internal structure. The filament possesses an interconnected highly oriented crystalline microstructure coextensive with its length coexisting with an interdispersed substantially disoriented non-crystalline phase. The filament microstructure imparts inter alia a propensity for the filament to undergo a low degree of shrinkage under a high degree of force at an elevated temperature as evidenced by a modulus ratio (as defined) of at least 0.1. The filament exhibits a relatively high initial modulus, coupled with a relatively high crystalline orientation function, and a relatively low amorphous orientation function.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing certain halogenated aromatic polyesters by an inverse interfacial polymerization technique. More specifically, the present invention offers a method for substantially reducing the amount of low molecular weight fraction which accompanies the formation of these polyesters when prepared by standard interfacial polymerization techniques by (1) inverting the order of addition of one phase to the other, i.e. by adding the aqueous phase to the organic phase, (2) controlling the rate of addition of the aqueous phase to the organic phase and (3) adding the catalyst to the organic phase prior to the addition of the aqueous phase thereto.

Inverse interfacial polymerization for preparing certain halogenated

A procedure is provided for enhancing the thermal stability of a multifilament polyester fibrous material during use when incorporated in a rubber tire matrix. A non-uniform deposition of a polyether urethane polymer (as defined) is provided upon at least the outer surface of the polyester fibrous material intermediate the conventional inner coating of fiber finish and the conventional outer coating of adhesive. The preformed polyether urethane polymer is applied from an aqueous dispersion of the same (as described), and is deposited in a concentration of about 1 to 6 percent by weight of the resulting fibrous material. The enhanced thermal stability of the resulting polyester fibrous material conveniently may be demonstrated by a determination of the strength retention of the same following subjection to heat while incorporated in a rubber matrix.

Production of improved polyester fibers for use in tires

An improved process is provided for the production of polymeric filamentary material or film. Molten melt-spinnable polymeric material capable of undergoing crystallization (e.g., a polyester) is extruded through a shaped orifice to form a filamentary material or film under high stress conditions, quenched to below its glass transition temperature to form a solid filamentary material or film, and sequentially passed for a brief residence time through a thermal conditioning zone at a temperature between its glass transition temperature and its melting temperature wherein the internal structure thereof is modified and substantial crystallization of the previously solidified filamentary material or film takes place. The filamentary material or film is withdrawn from the conditioning zone at a rate of 1000 to 6000 meters per minute while under a relatively high stress of about 0.1 to 1.0 gram per denier. The process is conducted while exerting a constant tension upon the filamentary material or film in the absence of stress isolation. The melt extrusion process yields a product wherein the tensile strength and modulus are improved and the shrinkage characteristics are diminished.
