An assembly useful for providing structural reinforcement and/or sound/vibration damping to a hollow member of a motor vehicle is provided which contains an injection-molded carrier made of a heat resistant thermoplastic composition, at least one of the first side and the second side of the carrier has at least one receptacle adapted to receive and retain an insert comprised of a heat-expandable resin composition. The carrier may have a plurality of openings in at least one of the first side or the second side forming a grid or lattice and the assembly may include a mounting member adapted to fasten the carrier to an interior wall of a hollow member.

An acoustic baffle device for sealing a cavity of a vehicle body at a predetermined cross section of the cavity is provided. The device has a carrier having an opening therein, a heat expandable sealing material affixed to the carrier, and a flap assembly having a flap normally held in place by a spring so as to close off the opening, wherein the flap is capable of being deflected by insertion of a tube through the opening.

An acoustic baffle assembly for sealing or baffling a hollow body having a mass of heat activated expandable material that is capable of activating at a predetermined temperature. A substrate supports the mass. The substrate has a central portion and spaced apart projections extending outwardly from the central portion. A novel expandable composition and method for using the same are disclosed. The disclosed method relates to using the composition, for example, as an automotive cavity sealant. The inventive composition normally is a combination of at least one base polymer, at least one expansion or blowing agents, at least one hydrocarbon resin, at least one curing agent or catalyst and optionally at least one additives such as a supplemental polymer, colorant, tackifier, processing oil, among others.

Expandable compositions and methods of making and using the compositions

A reinforcement for an expandable or foaming material is disclosed that comprises a first and a second member each having protuberances that are contacted when the first and second members are joined. The members are joined by bending a hinge that separates the members, or can be joined in multiple units to form a series. The members are maintained in a closed or joined position by at least one latch. Once joined, the first and second members define at least one opening wherein a foaming composition can be injected into the joined members. Alternatively, a preformed expandable material can be placed between the first and second members, or located on selected outer positions, e.g., within an automotive cavity to be sealed.
