A single unit with a backhaul interface and radio card able to support both metro cell outdoor (MCO) and metro radio outdoor (MRO) operations. The single unit includes a switch used to switch between these operational modes. The single unit is versatile from the standpoint that MCO or MRO operations may be selected at the time of installation, and this selection may be changed at any time while operating. The single unit configuration provides a low power MRO mode requiring up to 80% less power than the MCO mode, as the switching function of the single unit can power down all unused internal components and allow radio signals received at a backhaul interface to be exchanged directly with a radio card.

Method and apparatus for a single unit small, low-power base station supporting both metro cell outdoor (MCO) and metro radio outdoor (MRO) operations

In one embodiment, the method includes encrypting, at a device, data with a first key, and forming a message that includes a device identifier and the encrypted data. The device identifier identifies the device. A signaling message is formed that includes a class identifier, the message and an action code. The class identifier identifies a group of devices to which one or more devices belong. The action code indicates the type of data, and may be part of the message. The signaling message is sent to a network, for example, a wireless network. The wireless network identifies and routes the message portion of the signaling message based on the class identifier. And, using the class identifier and perhaps a device identifier, the wireless network may signal the device to change an operating parameter.

Method of machine-to-machine communication

A multiprocessor configuration includes a plurality of processing groups connected to form both a first and second communication path, and an interpath connection connecting the first and second communication paths. The first and second communication paths and the interpath connection provide allow communication between processors in different processing groups even if one processing group fails and, thus, creates a discontinuity in both the first and second communication paths. One or more processors in each processing group may be operable to perform fault recovery in response to a detected failure in another processing group.

Failure recovery in a multiprocessor configuration

A cellular communications network providing multi-hyperband capability comprises a mobile switching center acting as a data administration and call control center for a plurality of cells, each cell divided into one or more sectors. A plurality of communications links connect the mobile switching center to associated cells. Each sector is capable supporting one or more hyperbands. Entities representing sector-specific data are differentiated from hyperband-specific entities. Thus, a sector-related message transmitted via the communications links comprises a cell and sector number key and a plurality of parameters related to the cell and sector number, and a hyperband-related message transmitted via the communications links comprises a hyperband key, wherein the hyperband key corresponds to one of the supported multiple hyperbands, and a plurality of parameters related to the hyperband corresponding to the hyperband key.
