In one example, a rotor includes a monolithically formed rotor body and a plurality of helically arranged lobes formed from a first material, wherein each of the plurality of lobes defines an internal cavity between an outer surface and a central aperture.

The presently disclosed subject matter relates to multi-material electrical contacts, and methods of making multi-material electrical contact comprising a functionally graded monolithic structure, having a first metal and a second metal, an amount of the second metal as compared to an amount of the first metal increases with distance in the structure from a first surface to a second opposing surface of the structure such that the second metal content increases continuously or incrementally throughout the height of the electrical contact.

Cold spray additive manufacturing of multi-material electrical contacts

Rotors formed by an additive manufacturing process are presented. In one example, a method of making a rotor is presented including defining a printing order for the application of a first material, and creating a plurality of lobes arranged helically about a central opening or a shaft by adding a first material in the printing order, wherein each of the plurality of lobes defines an outer surface.

A method for manufacturing a gear includes providing a rim gear, a hub and a core wherein the core is annular and has a core forging temperature below a hot hardness temperature of the rim gear and the hub. The rim gear and the hub are rotated about an axis relative to the core. During the relative rotation, the rim gear and the hub are in contact with the core to generate friction heat to raise an interface temperature of the core to the core forging temperature. The hub is driven into the core to upset a first portion of the core into an outer annular groove defined in a first faying surface of the hub. The rim gear is driven over the core to upset a second portion of the core into an inner annular groove defined in a second faying surface of the rim gear.

Method for manufacturing a gear

A rotor assembly having a plurality of rotor plates mounted to a shaft, and methods of construction for a rotor assembly are disclosed. Each rotor plate in the assembly may be provided with a central opening extending between the first and second sides through which the shaft extends. In one aspect, the rotor plates are provided with a plurality of lobes extending away from the central opening, wherein each of the lobes has a lobe opening extending through the thickness of the plates. In one embodiment, the rotor plates are rotationally stacked to form a helical rotor.

Low inertia laminated rotor

A method for manufacturing a gear includes forming a bi-material billet from a steel cylinder having a cylindrical wall, a first end closed with a first steel cap, and an open second end distal to the first end. The method includes disposing a core material other than steel into the steel cylinder, welding a second steel cap onto the steel cylinder to form the bi-material billet, and heating the cylindrical wall. The method includes a first forging blow on the heated billet or on a disk-shaped rough forging forged from the heated billet with a first closed blocker die to produce a partial toothed preform, and a second forging blow on the preform with a second closed blocker die to produce a netshape gear. The first closed blocker die has a die cavity including gear tooth forms, and the partial toothed preform includes a plurality of spaced gear teeth.

A fluid vessel includes a body structure defining a cavity, an inlet structure defining a first channel, and an outlet structure defining a second channel. The body structure includes an overlay material surrounding the cavity, and includes a metal substrate surrounding the overlay material. The first channel and second channel are provided in fluid communication with the cavity. The inlet structure and outlet structure each include an overlay material surrounding the respective first channel and second channel, and include a metal substrate surrounding the respective overlay material. The overlay material of each of the body structure, the inlet structure, and the outlet structure is fused to the respective metal substrate of the body structure, the inlet structure, and the outlet structure through laser cladding.

Fluid vessel with abrasion and corrosion resistant interior cladding

A method of forming a position measurement system includes melting a surface of a substrate formed from a first material, wherein the surface defines at least one groove therein and wherein the surface is melted within the at least one groove. The method also includes, concurrent to melting, depositing a second material into the at least one groove to form a mixture of the first material and the second material. The method further includes solidifying the mixture to form an indicator material that is distinguishable from and metallurgically bonded to the first material, and depositing an alloy onto the substrate to form a corrosion-resistant cladding that covers the indicator material and the surface to thereby form the position measurement system. A position measurement system is also disclosed.

Corrosion-resistant position measurement system and method of forming same

A method of maintaining a rod of a hydraulic cylinder for a motion compensation system of an offshore platform includes non-destructive testing of a metallic cladding deposited onto the rod. An inspection crawler includes a visual inspection device, an eddy current inspection device and an ultrasonic inspection device. The method includes rotating the visual inspection device, the eddy current inspection device and the ultrasonic inspection device around a circumference of the rod while moving the inspection crawler along a longitudinal axis of the rod to simultaneously collect data related to the metallic cladding from the visual inspection device, the eddy current inspection device and the ultrasonic inspection device. The data is analyzed to detect any discontinuities, i.e., defects, in the metallic cladding.

Non-destructive test evaluation of welded claddings on rods of hydraulic cylinders used for saltwater, brackish and freshwater applications

A method for detecting a position of a cylinder rod includes depositing a plurality of welds substantially along the length of a steel rod and depositing a corrosion resistant material onto the steel rod by laser cladding. The cylinder rod is then placed proximate to a sensor assembly. One of the cylinder rod and the sensor assembly are moved relative to the other. The sensor assembly detects a change in properties between the steel rod and the welds and generates a corresponding signal. A change in position of the cylinder rod or damage to the cylinder rod can be detected by analyzing the number and strength of the signals.

Hydraulic cylinder rod position sensing method

A two wheel steering bicycle with two steering controls and rider positioned facing forward. A top tube member connects the rear head tube to the front head tube. The rear wheel attaches to the rear fork extending upwards. The rear fork steerer column passes through the rear head tube and can rotate within the rear head tube by means of a bicycle bearing headset. A rear steering handle is connected to the rear fork steerer column. The rear steering handle is designed to contact the rider's first hand. The front wheel attaches to the front fork extending upwards. The front fork steerer column passes through the front head tube and can rotate within the front head tube by means of a bicycle bearing headset. A front steering handle is connected to the front fork steerer column. The front steering handle is designed to contact the rider's second hand. A seat tube member attaches to the top tube member. A bicycle saddle is attached to the seat tube member in such a way as to position the rider facing forward parallel to the longitudinal axis of the top tube member. A bicycle bottom bracket, front sprocket, left and right crank and pedals are attached to the device. The rider's left hand is positioned at the rider's left side and contacts one of the steering handles. The rider's right hand is positioned at the rider's right side and contacts the other steering handle. The saddle and steering handles should be adjusted so that the rider's body is roughly balanced across the vertical plane of the rear and front wheels. The device moves forward and the rider keeps the device balanced by constantly correcting the front and rear steering handles. It may take some practice to make this correction reflex, but once mastered this device offers more control and artistic expression than a currently available bicycle.

A composite lightweight engine poppet valve () that has a valve head portion () and at least a portion of the stem portion () made from a titanium intermetallic material attached by way of a solid state attachment to a nickel base alloy transition piece () that is heat treated for high creep resistance. The tip portion () made from conventional material is first attached to one end of the transition piece. The transition piece () is cut to a desired length and then attached preferably by friction welding to the titanium intermetallic stem portion () at a preselected distance (d, d, or d). The tip portion () made from conventional material is then attached to the other end of the transition piece. In another embodiment, a second hollow stem portion () is attached to the transition piece () and the tip portion () is then attached thereto.

A front steering handle is connected to the front fork steerer column. The front steering handle is designed to contact the rider's lower arm and hand. A rider support member attaches to the center support member extending downward. A bicycle saddle is attached to the rider support member in such a way as to position the rider facing perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the center support member. A bicycle bottom bracket, front sprocket, left and right crank and pedals are attached to the bottom of the rider support member. The front sprocket is positioned perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the center support member. The rider is positioned perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the center support member. The rider's left arm is positioned at the user's left side and contacts the rear steering handle. The rider's right arm is positioned at the user's right side and contacts the front steering handle. The device moves forward to the rider's right. The saddle and steering handles should be adjusted so that the rider's body is roughly balanced across the vertical plane of the rear and front wheels. The device moves to the right and the rider keeps the device balanced by constantly correcting the coordinated rear and front steering systems. It may take some practice to make this correction reflex, but once mastered this device offers more control and artistic expression than a currently available bicycle.

Latitudinal aligned mono-wheel skate device

A two wheel articulated board device which the user can operate on smooth rough or smooth terrain. The device has a rear board member and a front board member which are connected at a pivot point. Each board member can rotate relative to the other board member around this pivot point. The device is supported by two wheels. A rear wheel which extends rear of the board and above the level of the board and a front wheel which extends forward of the board and above the level of the board. The front wheel is connected to the board by a front fork which attaches to the underside of the board. The rear wheel is connected to the board by a rear fork which attaches to the underside of the board. There is a flexible member that connects at one end with the underside of the device rear of the pivot point and at the other end at the underside of the device forward of the pivot point. The user motions the board forward by placing one foot on the rear board member with that foot oriented about 45 degrees off the major axis of the device. Forward motion is achieved by the user pushing against the ground with his/her other foot. Once the user has gained enough speed and begins coasting, the user repositions his/her feet perpendicular to the long axis of the device. While coasting the user can affect a change of direction by changing the relative orientation of his/her feet which are initially parallel without lifting them off the device. Moving the user's feet by bringing his/her toes closer together causes the rear board member to move relative to the front board member around the pivot point and thus affects a change of direction of the device. A flexible member running under the device along the major axis of the device and connected at one end to the rear board member and at the other end to the front board member applies a force to keep each board member aligned along their respective major axes.
