A method of processing. The method includes attaching a plurality of studs to a blank comprising a material having a first size approximating a second size of a part to be machined from the blank. The method also includes attaching a number of the plurality of studs to a tool tab. The method also includes attaching the tool tab to a tooling fixture. The method also includes removing material from the blank to form a finished part, wherein the plurality of studs remain attached to the blank during removing. The method also includes detaching the plurality of studs from the finished part.

Disclosed are methods, systems, and/or apparatus for the collective marking of a surface by two or more laser beams generated by a laser controller. A method includes receiving one or more input signals from a controller of the laser system. The method also includes adjusting a first mirror through a first galvanometer scanner, a second minor through a second galvanometer scanner, a third mirror through a third galvanometer scanner, and a fourth mirror through a fourth galvanometer scanner based on the one or more input signals. The method further includes steering, through the first mirror and the second mirror, a first laser beam generated by the controller and transmitted to a marking head through a beam delivery vessel; and steering, through the third mirror and the fourth minor, a second laser beam generated by the controller and transmitted to the marking head through another beam delivery vessel.

A method, an apparatus and/or a system of laser marking of an interior cavity of a securing means of a substance container is disclosed. In one embodiment, a solid-state laser marking system to mark a securing means of a substance container includes a semiconductor laser to emit a pumping laser beam. The solid-state laser marking system also includes a resonator to create the laser beam that is then focused through a lens to mark the securing means of the substance container having a maximum diameter of 5 cm. Further, the solid-state laser marking system includes a solid-state laser crystal doped with a rare-earth element, to produce a laser beam in response to being pumped by the pumping laser beam and a laser resonator. The laser resonator is configured to focus the laser beam of a spot size of less than 150 microns and a beam quality of Mless than 1.3.

A method is provided for improving the machinability of a titanium alloy includes heating the alloy at a temperature and time period that imparts to the alloy a microstructure having between about 10 and 15 vol. % alpha phase in a beta phase matrix. According to one embodiment, the alloy is thereafter annealed at a temperature lower than the temperature for the initial heating step, and for a duration that is longer than the time period for the initial heating step.

A portable precision flange grinder grinds a flange on a duct. The flange has an axis, a radius, and a periphery. A mount mounts the grinder within the duct. The mount attaches to openings at ends of the duct. A grinding wheel grinds a flange on a duct and arranged to rotate along a periphery of the flange. A first linkage translates the grinding wheel along an axis of the flange to bring the grinding wheel laterally in grinding contact with the flange. The first linkage engages with the mount along an axis of the flange. A second linkage translates the grinding wheel along a radius of the flange bringing the grinding wheel radially in grinding contact with the flange. The second linkage attaches to the first linkage. A bearing assembly rotates the grinding wheel about the periphery of the flange. The bearing assembly is attached to the first linkage.

An oscillator system is provided which produces a single mode output from a multimode seed beam and a multimode optical power source. The seed source employed in the oscillator system produces a multimode seed beam that is used to injection seed a multimode optical power source. The optical power source has a short cavity such that the longitudinal modes of the multimode optical power source are sufficiently spaced apart that a mode of the optical power source can be positioned relative to the multimode seed beam such that the seed beam does not significantly overlap with neighboring longitudinal modes of the optical power source. By positioning a single longitudinal mode to overlap with the seed beam where the seed beam does not significantly overlap with neighboring longitudinal modes of the optical power source, a high energy single longitudinal mode output is produced. The optical power source should have an optical cavity length that is sufficiently short to cause the longitudinal modes of the multimode optical power source to be sufficiently spaced apart so that the multimode seed beam does not overlap with neighboring longitudinal modes of the optical power source. The oscillator system preferably includes an output controller loop which serves to center the longitudinal mode output of the optical power source relative to the center of the seed beam. The oscillator system also preferably includes a tuner controller which enables the oscillator system to scan over a series of wavelengths.

A synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) using a temperature tuned 90 degree phase matched LBO crystal is disclosed which provides a broad selection of output wavelengths. In one embodiment a Ti:sapphire pump source having a cavity length matched to the OPO cavity length pumps a cavity with an LBO crystal located at the cavity waist of the cavity mode. Resources are included to, tune the OPO to a desired wavelength, repetitively scan through a series of desired wavelengths, and adjust the cavity length to obtain a synchronous pumping condition and diagnose a wavelength at which the OPO is operating. A frequency doubled beam in the LBO crystal is generated as a substantially collinear alignment beam.

Synchronously pumped sub-picosecond optical parametric oscillator

The multimode seed beam preferably has a bandwidth, defined as the full width half maximum of the spectral output, of between about 0.025 cm.sup.-1 and 2.5 cm.sup.-1. The seed beam most preferably has a bandwidth of about 0.2 cm.sup.-1. The optical power source should have an optical cavity length that is sufficiently short to cause the longitudinal modes of the multimode optical power source to be sufficiently spaced apart so that the multimode seed beam does not overlap with neighboring longitudinal modes of the optical power source. Since the spacing of the longitudinal modes equals c/2 L where c is the speed of light and L is the optical length of the cavity, the optical power source preferably has an optical cavity length less than or equal to about c/2 bw where c is the speed of light and bw is the bandwidth of the multimode seed beam. It is preferred that the optical power source have a cavity length of between about 0.2 cm and 20 cm.

A hole is formed in a high-strength steel part and a lubricant consisting essentially of one or more metal powders, preferably of nickel or molybdenum; a metal powder which is more reactive than the steel of the workpiece such as zinc; and an organic medium is applied. A forming mandrel having a generally cylindrical shape with a frustoconical portion on either end is centered over the hole. The mandrel is pushed through the hole at a rate such that the steel adjacent the hole is coldworked and its microstructure is transformed from an austenitic to a normal tempered martensitic structure.

A mode locked pulsed laser incorporates an intracavity element to compensate for the dispersion caused by other intracavity elements. This element reduces the tendency of the pulse to broaden in the cavity due to group velocity dispersion and results in very short pulses. In the laser of the present invention, mode locking is initiated by detecting the beat frequency between adjacent longitudinal modes using a high speed photodiode. This signal is amplified and then the frequency is divided by two. The signal is passed through an electronically adjustable phase shifter and then to a power amplifier. This signal is applied to the acousto-optic modelocker. If the cavity length drifts the beat frequency between the longitudinal modes changes. The rf signal applied to the modulator changes in exactly the right manner to track the drift in cavity length. Thus the modelocker is automatically synched to the round trip of the laser cavity.
