A valve for downhole well service, having a rotary indexer carrying an elastically-loaded valve element on a valve seat surface in a flow passage, the valve element adapted to obstruct one or more flow passages in the valve seat surface when aligned therewith. The valve may additionally, or alternatively, comprise an elastically-loaded valve element mounted in one or more flow passages in the valve seat surface, this valve element adapted to obstruct the flow passage in which it is installed when urged into contact with the valve seat surface. When a valve element is mounted in one or more of the flow passages in the valve seat, the indexer comprises a protrusion positioned to engage such valve element and force it out of contact with the valve seat surface. The valve may be actuated by command from the surface by sending telemetry elements to a downhole telemetry data detector.

Downhole valve

A system is disclosed for communication from an instrument disposed in a wellbore. The system includes a flow diverter selectively operable to conduct fluid flow between a first path along the interior of a housing and a second path along the interior of the housing. The system includes an initiator operatively coupled to the flow diverter to cause selective operation thereof in response to an event.

Downhole fluid pressure signal generation and transmission

Apparatus and method for pulling or inserting jointed pipe sections (18) having upset ends (20) within a well utilizing a coiled tubing injector (26). The coiled tubing injector (26) has a pair of opposed endless chains (50, 52) including gripper blocks (58) for gripping the pipe sections (18). An axial gap (G) is provided in chains (50, 52) between adjacent gripper blocks (58) to receive the upset ends (20). To align accurately upset ends (20) with gap (G), a sensing mechanism (100, FIGS. 11 and 12) is provided to sense the location of upset end (20) and a sensing mechanism (110, 112, FIGS. 13 and 14) is provided to sense the location of gap (G). An operator in response to signals from the sensors accurately aligns upset ends (20) with gap (G).

A downhole tool (12) connected to the lower end of a coiled tubing string (14). A wireline cable (16) extends downwardly through the coiled tubing string (14) and through the center of the tool (12) to define an annulus between the cable (16) and the outer housing (66). Annular valves (98, 100) control annulus fluid flow. A clamping device (26) releasably secures the wireline cable (16). The disconnect for the downhole tool (12) comprises an electrically activated fluid pressure mechanism for releasing disconnect dogs or latches (116, FIG. 1H) carried by an upper tool portion (12A) and releasably securing a lower tool portion (12B). The fluid actuated mechanism is activated by an electrical solenoid valve (124) to permit actuation of a disconnect piston (148) by communicating pressurized hydraulic fluid in a reservoir (168) through fluid passages 170, 158 to a piston fluid chamber (156). Upon a predetermined fluid pressure provided between internal fluid in the tool and external fluid in the well, piston (148) moves downwardly to contact and move retainer sleeve (140) downwardly to permit the locking dogs (116) to retract within the recess (144) of retainer sleeve (140) as shown in FIG. 4B to release upper tool portion (12A) from lower tool portion (12B).

Downhole tool

For use in drill pipe conveyed logging systems wherein the logging apparatus is enclosed in a housing affixed to the lower end of a drill pipe string, a system is disclosed utilizing a wet connector and overshot. The wet connector includes a centralized upstanding mechanical connector means having a J-slot cooperative with pins inserted thereinto. The J-slot is adjacent to a sleeve which telescopes over an enclosed and protected upwardly facing electrical connector means. On the overshot, the solid body thereof includes a lower appended skirt having inwardly protruding pins which engage the J-slots to achieve a separate mechanical connection. There is internally of the overshot a spring mounted telescoping and movable electrical connector including a cooperative socket engaging the plug of the wet connector. The electrical connection is kept separate from the mechanical connection so that the entire load of operation is carried separately without interfering with operation of the electrical connectors.

Wet connector for use with drill pipe conveyed logging apparatus

In a tubing conveyed perforating gun assembly having shaped charges to perforate a well, an improved pressure sequence shaped charge detonator is included. The preferred form of device is appended to the bottom of the assembly to function as a backup detonator. First and second piston and cylinder assemblies in an elongate body provide pressure initiated arming and subsequent pressure initiated firing pin movement to achieve primer cord detonation for perforation of the well. The pressure sequence is controllable, selectively to a specified pressure to arm and thereafter to fire.
