A dispensing device comprises a body having a chamber sized to accommodate a volume of solid halogen source therein. The chamber comprises an open end and a closed end. A number of apertures extend through the body and into the chamber near the closed end. A control member comprises an open end and a closed end separated by a wall. The open end of the control member is rotatably mounted over the closed end of the chamber. Openings extend through the wall and are positioned at locations that correspond to the apertures so that alignment of the openings with respective apertures form dispensement ports. The ports has a degree of closure that can be precisely controlled by rotation of the control member about the body for dispensing the halogen solution to the water. A cap is releasably attached to the open end of the chamber to form an air and water-tight seal therebetween, creating an air head within the body when placed into the water. The air head controls the amount of solid halogen source wetted to that portion adjacent the apertures. Water is circulated through the apertures to wet the solid source and generate halogen solution. Controlled solid source wetting and variable adjustment of the dispensement ports permits halogen solution to be dispensed to the water in a precisely controlled manner.

A filter unit capable of receiving a cartridge-type filter element is provided for use in-line with a suction-type pool cleaning device. The unit has an elongated housing with intake and outlet ports at opposite ends. The intake port may be connected via a hose to a pool cleaning device and the outlet port to a suction port in the pool circulation system. The unit can use a filter cartridge with an element that offers a filtration coarseness somewhere between that of the system filter and a strainer element. The housing may be adapted to receive a strainer basket in place of the filter cartridge and thus serve as a conventional leaf-trap.

The invention provides a self-contained cordless electric pool and spa vacuum cleaner which is easily maneuverable over both flat and highly contoured underwater surfaces. A pump impeller, powered by an electric motor, is used to draw water through a compact filter cartridge. The efficiency of the filter cartridge allows for the use of a small motor and small battery which, in turn, result in the small size of the vacuum cleaner. All electrical components are enclosed in a watertight chamber so as to allow the entire cleaner to be submerged under water.

A filter and chemical dispenser combination for filtering and chemically treating water to be added to a body of water includes a liquid inlet, a liquid outlet, and a flow passage between the inlet and the outlet. A filter element is positioned in the flow passage between the inlet and the outlet extending in a longitudinal direction and having a hollow interior. Means are provided in the interior of the filter element and in the flow passage for supporting a chemical. In a further embodiment of the invention, a chemical dispenser is provided for chemically treating a body of water wherein the dispenser includes an inlet for pressurized liquid and an outlet for liquid from the inlet. A flow passage is between the inlet and the outlet. A chemical chamber is provided in the flow passage between the inlet and the outlet for forming a compressible gas pocket. The chamber includes a base for supporting the chemical. The pocket-forming means has a first aperture for allowing liquid from the inlet into the pocket-forming chamber, and a second aperture for passing liquid out of the chamber.

A chlorine dispenser for spas includes a tubular container disposed within a sleeve having one closed end. The container and sleeve form a chamber for receiving the solid chlorine source. The sleeve contains apertures for providing access by water to the solid chlorine source. The sleeve is axially movable along the container, and a locknut engages the container to secure a given position of the sleeve. The container is attached to a foam-filled float, which ensures positive buoyancy of the dispenser in water. The sleeve is ballasted to ensure that the dispenser is vertically disposed in the water.

There is provided a flowmeter comprising a vertically extending inlet chamber having an inlet opening at its lower end, a vertically extending outlet chamber horizontally spaced-apart from the inlet chamber and having an outlet opening at its lower end, a communicating passage between the inlet and outlet chambers along the vertical length of the inlet chamber and a ball disposed in the inlet chamber and afforded slidable vertical movement therein. The flowmeter further comprises coaxially aligned inlet and outlet couplings for connecting the flowmeter to a horizontal fluid line.
