The present invention relates generally to medical devices containing nanoporous surfaces and methods for making same. More specifically, the invention relates to implantable vascular stents or other biomedical devices having at least one dealloyed nanoporous layer that promotes improved cellular adhesion properties that promote healing and long term biocompatibility. In the case of stents, the nanoporous layer promotes re-endothelialization at sites of stent implantation vasculature, improves overall healing, and reduces inflammation and intimal disease progression. The nanoporous layer may be optionally loaded with one or more therapeutic agent to further improve the function of the implanted stent and further augment clinical efficacy.

Nanoporous stents with enhanced cellular adhesion and reduced neointimal formation

The present invention relates generally to medical devices with therapy eluting components and methods for making same. More specifically, the invention relates to implantable medical devices having at least one porous layer, and methods for making such devices, and loading such devices with therapeutic agents. A mixture or alloy is placed on the surface of a medical device, then one component of the mixture or alloy is generally removed without generally removing the other components of the mixture or alloy. In some embodiments, a porous layer is adapted for bonding non-metallic coating, including drug eluting polymeric coatings. A porous layer may have a random pore structure or an oriented or directional grain porous structure. One embodiment of the invention relates to medical devices, including vascular stents, having at least one porous layer adapted to resist stenosis or cellular proliferation without requiring elution of therapeutic agents. The invention also includes methods, devices, and specifications for loading of drugs and other therapeutic agents into nanoporous coatings.

Method for loading nanoporous layers with therapeutic agent

Apparatuses, systems and methods for treating a patient by positioning an expandable body () having one or more microstructures () within a body lumen and penetrating the lumen wall with the microstructures (). The microstructures are formed in or attached to the lumen through a cacheter or other suitable device. Each microstructure () has an end () which is attached to the expandable body and a free end (). Once the apparatus is positioned within the body lumen in a desired location one or more of the microstructures are deployed wherein the free ends project radially outwardly. The free ends of the deployed microstructures penetrate the lumen wall by continued expansion of the body. Additionally, a therapeutic agent may be delivered to the lumen wall by the penetrated microstructures.

Expandable body having deployable microstructures and related methods

Methods for fabricating a medical device having at least one porous layer include providing a medical device having at least one alloy and removing at least one component of the alloy to form the porous layer. Although methods may be used to make stent devices with porous layers, any other suitable medical device may be made having one or more porous layers. An alloy may include any suitable combination of metals and sometimes a combination of metal and non-metal. In some embodiments, one or more of the most electrochemically active component(s) of an alloy are removed by the dissolving (or 'dealloying') process, to leave a porous matrix behind. The porous matrix layer may then be infused with one or more therapeutic agents for enhancing treatment of a patient.

Medical devices having porous layers and methods for making same

The infrared (IR) sensing apparatus () and related method achieves improvement over traditional infrared sensors by levitating or suspending the IR platform () to reduce the loss of IR energy, which normally dissipates in the form of heat. The levitating IR sensitive platform () of the present invention has no contact with the substrate () during energy absorption, thus eliminating a substantial disadvantage existing in the conventional systems proposed heretofore.

High sensitivity infrared sensing apparatus and related method thereof

An apparatus for treating a patient. The apparatus includes a deployment mechanism having a surface. The apparatus also includes at least one probe disposed on the deployment mechanism surface. The probe extends between 25 microns and 1000 microns from the surface of the deployment mechanism. The apparatus also includes material coated on the probe. A method for treating a patient. The method includes the steps of placing a material with a probe which extends less than 1000 microns from a surface of a deployment mechanism. Next, there is the step of inserting the probe into preferably a blood vessel of a patient. Then, there is the step of penetrating the interior wall of the vessel from the interior of the vessel with the probe by activating the deployment mechanism so the material can contact the vessel.

Method and apparatus for drug and gene delivery

The present invention is directed to a process for fabricating a microelectromechanical device from a substrate carrying at least one layer of a non-erodible material laid out to form at least a portion of the microelectromechanical device, at least one layer of an erodible material, and at least one sacrificial layer. The process includes the step of using the layer of non-erodible material as a mask and anistropically etching any of the layer of erodible material not occluded by the layer of non-erodible material. The process also includes the step of isotropically etching the sacrificial layer under at least a beam portion of the microelectromechanical device to free the beam portion of the microelectromechanical device from the substrate.

Microelectromechanical structure and process of making same

A method is provided for inhibiting stiction of suspended microstructures during post-release-etch rinsing and drying. The microstructures are shaped to include additional convex corners at regions of the released portion of the microstructure that can undergo substantial displacement toward the substrate. A stiction-inhibition method also includes incorporating clefts between the microstructure and adjacent field regions at regions of the microstructure which cannot undergo substantial displacement toward the substrate. Methods for inhibiting stiction are also provided wherein high-temperature rinse liquid is used and wherein a high-temperature anneal follows a rinsing step.

Method to prevent adhesion of micromechanical structures

A microelectromechanical device is comprised of a cantilevered beam positioned above, and free to move relative to, a substrate. The beam may carry a plurality of conductors which are insulated from one another. One or more tips is positioned on the beam with each tip being in electrical contact with one of the conductors. A memory device may be constructed by providing an array of such cantilevered beams proximate to a layer of media. Devices for positioning the beam in x and y directions perpendicular to each other and parallel to the layer of media and in a z direction perpendicular to the media are provided. A control circuit generates control signals input to the positioning devices for positioning the tips according to x, y, and z coordinates. A read/write circuit which is in electrical communication with the conductors of the beam, provide signals to the tips to cause the tips to write those signals to the layer of media in a write mode and to read previously written signals sensed by the tips in a read mode. A fabrication method is also disclosed.

The present invention pertains to a method for making a plurality of barbs. The method is comprised of the steps of first forming a substrate of a first material with a layer of a second material thereon, and at predetermined discrete locations on the layer a third material. Next, there is the step of removing portions of the layer and the substrate such that a frustrum shape is formed on the surface of the substrate. Next, there is the step of removing the third material but leaving the first and second materials essentially untouched. Then, there is the step of reforming the layer made of the second material on the frustrum surface of the substrate. Next, there is the step of removing portions of the layer at essentially the center of the lowest points of the frustrum. There is then the step of removing portions of the substrate but not the second material such that a plurality of barbs is created.

Micromechanical barb and method for making the same

A system for linking a first member with a second member. The system is comprised of a first plurality of micromechanical barbs disposed on the first member. The system is also comprised of a second plurality of micromechanical barbs disposed on the second member. The barbs on the first member and the second member are of a shape such that a locking connection is formed between the first member and second member through the first plurality and second plurality of barbs when placed together. Each of the barbs of the first plurality and second plurality of barbs extend from the first member and second member, respectively, to a height no greater than 5 millimeters. The present invention also pertains to a micromechanical barb for linking with an object. The micrormechanical barb comprises a base. The micromechanical barb is also comprised of a support which extends from the base. The micromechanical barb additionally is comprised of a head which is disposed upon the support and which mates with the object such that a locking connection is found therebetween. The length of the support and the head is less than 5 millimeters.

Tissue-connective devices with micromechanical barbs

A system for linking a first member with a second member. The system is comprised of a first plurality of micromechanical barbs disposed on the first member. The system is also comprised of a second plurality of micromechanical barbs disposed on the second member. The barbs on the first member and the second member are of a shape such that a locking connection is formed between the first member and second member through the first plurality and second plurality of barbs when placed together. Each of the barbs of the first plurality and second plurality of barbs extend from the first member and second member, respectively, to a height no greater than 5 millimeters. The first plurality of barbs and second plurality of barbs oppose each other. The present invention also pertains to a micromechanical barb for linking with an object. The micromechanical barb comprises a base. The micromechanical barb is also comprised of a support which extends from the base. The micromechanical barb additionally is comprised of a head which is disposed upon the support and which mates with the object such that a locking connection is found therebetween. The length of the support and the head is less than 5 millimeters.

This invention relates to an electrically tunable semiconductor device. At least one thin film of piezoelectric substance is positioned in stress transmitting relation to the semiconductor-device and a signal from an electrical circuit causes the piezoelectric to transmit stress to the semiconductor thereby varying the response of the semiconductor device.
