A method of in-situ electrolyte preparation in a flow battery includes providing a vanadium-based electrolyte solution having vanadium ions of predominantly vanadium Vto a first electrode and a second electrode of at least one cell of a flow battery. The vanadium Vat the first electrode is converted to vanadium Vand the vanadium Vat the second electrode is converted to vanadium Vby providing electrical energy to the electrodes. A reducing agent is then provided to the vanadium Vat the second electrode to reduce the Vto vanadium V. The vanadium Vat the first electrode is then converted to vanadium Vand the vanadium Vat the second electrode is then converted to vanadium Vby providing electrical energy to the electrodes. A simple method to produce predominantly vanadium Velectrolyte from a Vsource, such as VO, is also taught.

In-situ electrolyte preparation in flow battery

A flow battery includes an electrochemical cell that has a first electrode, a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode, and a separator layer arranged between the first electrode and the second electrode. The separator layer is formed of a polymer that has a polymer backbone with cyclic groups that are free of unsaturated nitrogen and one or more polar groups bonded between the cyclic groups.

A fuel tank inerting system is disclosed, comprising a fuel tank and an electrochemical cell comprising a cathode and an anode separated by a separator comprising an anion transfer medium. A cathode fluid flow path is in operative fluid communication with a catalyst at the cathode between a cathode fluid flow path inlet and a cathode fluid flow path outlet. An anode fluid flow path is in operative fluid communication with a catalyst at the anode, and includes an anode fluid flow path outlet. An electrical connected to a power source is arranged to provide a voltage difference between the anode and the cathode. An air source is in operative fluid communication with either or both of the cathode flow path inlet and the anode flow path inlet. An inert gas flow path is in operative fluid communication with the cathode flow path outlet and the fuel tank.

Fuel tank inerting system

A heat transfer system is disclosed including heat transfer fluid flow paths () through a heat exchanger evaporator () and a heat exchanger condenser (). The system includes an electrochemical cell () that transforms an electrochemically reactive agent in the heat transfer fluid between first and second compounds having different boiling points. In some embodiments, the electrochemically active agent can include a fluorinated organic compound including an electrochemically active substituent group that reversibly transforms between the first and second compounds. In some embodiments, the heat transfer fluid can include the electrochemically active agent and an electrochemically non-active refrigerant in a mixture.

A method of maintaining health of a flow battery includes determining an average oxidation state of a common electrochemically active elemental specie in first and second fluid electrolytes on, respectively, a positive side and a negative side of an electrochemical cell of a flow battery, and adjusting the average oxidation state in response to the average oxidation state deviating from a predefined average oxidation state value.

Method of maintaining health of a flow battery

Systems and methods for generating inerting gas on vehicles are described. The systems include a proton exchange membrane (PEM) inerting system, a pure water replenishment system configured to provide pure water to the PEM inerting system, wherein the pure water replenishment system is in fluid communication with the PEM inerting system to replenish water lost during operation of the PEM inerting system, and a control system configured to control operation of the pure water replenishment system to automatically replenish pure water to the PEM inerting system.

Water systems for onboard inerting systems of vehicles

A redox flow battery includes first and second cells. Each cell has electrodes and a separator layer arranged between the electrodes. A first circulation loop is fluidly connected with the first electrode of the first cell. A polysulfide electrolyte solution has a pH 11.5 or greater and is contained in the first recirculation loop. A second circulation loop is fluidly connected with the second electrode of the second cell. An iron electrolyte solution has a pH 3 or less and is contained in the second circulation loop. A third circulation loop is fluidly connected with the second electrode of the first cell and the first electrode of the second cell. An intermediator electrolyte solution is contained in the third circulation loop. The cells are operable to undergo reversible reactions to store input electrical energy upon charging and discharge the stored electrical energy upon discharging.

Redox flow battery with electrolyte balancing and compatibility enabling features

A redox flow battery includes a redox flow cell, a supply/storage system external of the redox flow cell, and a controller. The supply/storage system includes first and second electrolytes for circulation through the redox flow cell. The first electrolyte is a liquid electrolyte having electrochemically active species with multiple, reversible oxidation states. The electrochemically active species can form a solid precipitate blockage in the redox flow cell. The controller is configured to identify whether there is the solid precipitate blockage in the redox flow cell and, if so, initiate a regeneration mode that reduces the oxidation state of the electrochemically active species in the liquid electrolyte to dissolve, in situ, the solid precipitate blockage.

A redox flow battery system includes a redox flow battery that has a redox flow cell, and a supply/storage system external of the redox flow cell. The supply/storage system includes first and second electrolytes for circulation through the redox flow cell. At least the first electrolyte is an aqueous liquid electrolyte that has electrochemically active species with multiple, reversible oxidation states. There is a gas vent passage connected with the redox flow battery to receive water byproduct that evolves from side reaction of the first electrolyte. A bypass passage is connected with the supply/storage system to receive the aqueous electrolyte. An electrochemical recovery cell includes a first half-cell connected to the gas vent passage to receive as a reactant the water byproduct and a second half-cell connected to the bypass passage to receive as a reactant the first electrolyte.

An electrocaloric module includes an electrocaloric element that includes an electrocaloric film, a first electrode on a first surface of the electrocaloric film, and a second electrode on a second surface of the electrocaloric film. A support is attached along an edge portion of the electrocaloric film, leaving a central portion of the electrocaloric film unsupported film. At least one of the first and second electrodes includes a patterned disposition of conductive material on the film surface. The electrocaloric module also includes a first thermal connection configured to connect to a first thermal flow path between the electrocaloric element and a heat sink, a second thermal connection configured to connect to a second thermal flow path between the electrocaloric element and a heat source, and a power connection connected to the first and second electrodes and configured to connect to a power source.

A method for a redox flow battery includes using a cell of a redox flow battery to store electrical energy and discharge the stored electrical energy. The using includes circulating a first electrolyte solution through a first circulation loop in fluid connection with the first electrode of the cell; circulating a second electrolyte solution through a second circulation loop in fluid connection with the second electrode of the cell; and at least one of a first element from the first electrolyte solution in the first electrode permeates through the separator layer and precipitates as a first solid product in the second electrode and a second element from the second electrolyte solution permeates through the separator layer and precipitates a second solid product in the first electrode. The method also includes removing at least a portion of the first solid product or the second solid product from the first electrode and the second electrode, respectively.

The Power On mode maintains at least a low level of hydrogen introduction and circulation sufficient to maintain a predetermined presence, e.g., pressure, of hydrogen at the fuel cell stack assembly ().
