The present invention relates to the use of halogen compounds, including iodide, and chalcogenide compounds, including iodide, sulfide and selenide, to treat and prevent diseases and injuries. The present invention further relates to compositions comprising a halogen compound and/or a chalcogenide compound, including pharmaceutical compositions, as well as methods of manufacturing such compounds and administering such compositions to subjects in need thereof.

Halogen treatment of heart attack and ischemic injury

A method is disclosed for preparing a patterned continuous polymeric brush on a substrate surface. The method generally involves functionalization of the substrate surface followed by surface-initiated polymerization at the initiation sites so provided, e.g., using a living free radical polymerization technique or the like, whereby a covalently bound continuous polymeric brush results, with acid-labile groups present throughout. An acid is then applied to the continuous polymer brush in a predetermined pattern, under conditions that result in removal of the acid-labile groups in at least one first region of the continuous polymer brush but not in at least one second region of the continuous polymer brush. In a preferred embodiment, the acid is a photogenerated acid resulting from imagewise irradiation of a photoacid generator applied as a film or coating to the surface-bound polymer brush.

Process for preparing a patterned continuous polymeric brush on a substrate surface

A portable aquabrood that is formed from an enclosed animal habitat chamber assembly and an enclosed water chamber assembly that are assembled together as a unitary member. The animal habitat chamber assembly has a first upright end wall and a primary bottom wall that are both common walls of the water chamber assembly. The water chamber assembly has a major bottom wall that is spaced a predetermined height below the primary bottom wall thus when the water chamber assembly has a predetermined amount of water in it, that water will directly contact the primary bottom wall and a major protion of the first end wall of the animal habitat chamber assembly. An electric submersible heater is mounted in the interior of the water chamber assembly, it heats the water which warms the air in the chamber. The warmed air passes through the respective common walls to keep recently hatched birds or other animals that need to be kept warm in the animal habitat chamber assembly. There is also a humidity adjustment valve in the upright common end wall of the animal habitat chamber assembly.
