A wheel end assembly including a live spindle secured to a wheel hub at an outboard end. A bearing surrounding the spindle and abutted against a shoulder on the spindle. Said bearing preloaded by a retention structure that slidably engages the bearing to compress the bearing against the shoulder. A clutch ring slidably engages splines associated with the live spindle and with an axle portion to connect and disconnect the axle to the live spindle and accordingly the wheel hub.

Retention mechanism for vehicle wheel assembly

A control for a differential for controlling the relative rotation of a pair of axles extended from the differential to a front or rear pair of wheels. An indicator shaft is coupled to the axles, e.g., through a planetary gear arrangement (the indicator shaft being the sun gear) whereby when the axles rotate in unison the ring gear and planet gear set of the planetary gear arrangement are synchronized to not drive the sun gear/indicator shaft. When one axle rotates at a rate different than the other, the sun gear is rotated. A brake mechanism is coupled to the sun gear. A sensor senses the rotational rate as well as the acceleration of the sun gear. A controller is provided to control the braking of the sun gear. Braking of the sun gear will force the axles to rotate in unison.

Control for vehicle differential

A transfer case for a vehicle having two output shafts, a gear reduction assembly, a coupling mechanism and an overrunning roller clutch for selectively producing driving of one shaft only or both shafts concurrently. The coupling mechanism selectively couples one output shaft to either (1) an input shaft, (2) the gear reduction assembly, or (3) a neutral position. The overrunning clutch has an inner race, an outer race, and rollers located between the races. Drag shoes are positioned to frictionally slide on a drag surface of a selectively grounded member to retard the rollers. A resilient band urges the drag shoes against the drag surface. When the drag shoes rotate at a sufficient speed they disengage from the drag surface so as to provide no force to retard the rollers. When the ground member is grounded it provides the drag surface for the drag shoes. When the ground member is ungrounded it is free to rotate and the drag shoes do not provide a drag force to bias the rollers. A latch may be coupled to the inner race to engage a roller cage to prevent high speed lock-up. A drag ring is located inside the outer race and provides a drag force on the rollers to advance the rollers when it is desired, e.g., when front wheel compression braking is advantageous. An actuator assembly is provided with a variable speed drive for shifting the transfer case between modes of operation.

Transfer case with selectively grounded member

A shift assembly for shifting the gears of a transfer case of a vehicle as between two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, neutral and four wheel drive range. A mounting plate rigidly mounted to the transfer case has a bottom configuration characterized by two cut out portions separated by a dependent landing portion. The shaft rod and its support housing are pivoted to the plate with a locating pin protruded from the shift rod through the housing and into the configured cut out portions of the mounting plate. The shift rod is biased upwardly relative to the support housing and is retained by the upward biasing into whichever of the cut out portions it is positioned. Repositioning is accomplished by depression of the rod against the upward biasing and pivoting of the rod to position the locating pin to the other cut out portion or on the landing portion separating the cut out portions. A depression in the landing portion identifies the neutral position. The locating pin additionally functions, due to its protrusion through the support housing, to retain the assembly of the shift rod in the support housing and prevent turning of the shift rod and locating pins.

Shift assembly for shifting between drive positions in a four-wheel

A winch design for consumer applications wherein the planetary carrier assemblies are split between the two ends of the drum. The drum is mounted on heavy duty brackets and the housing elements surround the planetary carrier assemblies and also, independent of the drum, are mounted to the brackets. The housing elements are molded with the ring gear configured therein. They are produced from the same moldings. Interconnection as between the planetary carrier assemblies is through an interconnect shaft that is driven by the output shaft of the first planetary carrier assembly (coupled to the motor drive shaft) and carries the sun gear of the second planetary carrier assembly.
