There is described a unique instrument system employing a laser, having a polarized and collimated beam of radiation, which is split into a multitude of primary and secondary beams containing the same desirable properties of high collimation and monochromaticity. The secondary beams are used to measure simultaneously multiple antigen-antibody (Ag-Ab) agglutinations reactions involving latex particles.

An aerosol dispenser dispenses the contents of a metering chamber by depression of a slidable stem which extends through the metering chamber and into the main fluid reservoir of the dispenser. The stem includes a dispensing passage which lies within one of a pair of chamber sealing sleeves when the stem is in a rest position, thus fluidically isolating the exterior of the apparatus from the metering chamber. In this position, the metering chamber and the main reservoir are also fluidically isolated from each other. After shaking the dispenser to mix its contents, i.e., an active agent and propellant, the stem is then depressed into a charging position in which the dispensing passage is placed into engagement with an additional sealing sleeve mounted within the metering chamber to fluidically isolate the metering chamber from the exterior of the dispenser. Simultaneously, the bypass passage is positioned to straddle the other chamber sealing sleeve, and to thus fluidically connect the main reservoir to the metering chamber, which is then charged with the active agent and propellant from the reservoir. The stem is then released, and a spring drives the stem towards its first rest position. During this movement, the apparatus is in its dispensing position, and the contents of the charged metering chamber are dispensed through the dispensing passage exteriorly of the apparatus. After each metered dose is dispensed, the stem returns to its rest position, and the metering chamber is again fluidically isolated from both the reservoir and the exterior of the dispenser.

A dual wavelength spectrophotometer for ampoule content inspection, in particular for ampoule leak detection wherein leaks are initially 'flagged' via the dye bath immersion technique. Light transmitted through the ampoule is received by a bifurcated fiber optic cable providing via a random mix arrangement substantially identical ampoule optical signature signals. Each is directed through preselected interference filters, chosen on the one hand on the basis of the dye being used and the glass ampoule and its contents on the other hand. Associated with the filters are respective photodetectors, the output signals of which are connected to a difference amplifier stage. The output (if any) of the latter is compared to a preestablished (dye) threshold signal, which represents the minimum level (of dye) from which to effect a reject status. The ampoule contents or a particular component thereof may also be investigated in this manner. The photodetector outputs are also summed and the resultant compared to a second preestablished threshold in order to provide a failsafe system capability against optical failure and the like. The difference signal/comparison circuit leg may be constructed to provide logrithmic function capability and thus produce an output which a proportional to concentration. Therefrom the concentration of the ampoule contents (or the dye) can be determined, for example to lie within a preestablished 'window'.

Use of an improved water-swellable carboxymethylcellulose paper in a unique pharmaceutical unit dosage form comprising a stack of edible webs laminated at the edges at least some of which are paper is described. The subject paper is a superior delaminating agent in said unit dosage forms.
