A method of making an encapsulated OLED panel with a pass-through hole comprising: creating a pass-through hole with side walls within the central emission area of an OLED panel; providing at least a first support element arranged in contact with a portion of a face of the OLED panel and overlapping the edge of the hole such that a portion of the support element is located above or within the hole and is spaced from the side walls; and providing a sealant in contact with the first support element and desirably, the side walls as well. Both the first support element and sealant provide a barrier to moisture and oxygen from entering the internal OLED structures through the cut side wall formed during the creation of the pass-through hole in a previously encapsulated OLED panel.

Method for making OLED with pass-through hole

An apparatus for depositing one or more organic material layers of an OLED lighting device upon a first region of a substrate and one or more conducting layers upon a second region, wherein the conducting layers partially or completely cover and extend beyond one side of the organic layers, comprising: a reusable mask in contact with the substrate, at least one mask open area having an overhang feature; one or more sources of vaporized organic material, selected to form layers of the OLED lighting device, and the vaporized organic material plume is shaped, on the side corresponding to the mask overhang feature, so as to limit substantial transfer of organic material on said side to angles less than or equal to a selected cutoff angle to the first region; and one or more sources of vaporized conducting material that transfer conducting material to the second region, wherein the second region partially or completely overlaps the first region and extends beyond the first region on the side corresponding to the overhang feature of the mask.

Apparatus and method for making OLED lighting device

A thin film environmental barrier encapsulation process includes providing an electronic device on a substrate, a first reactant gaseous material, a second reactant gaseous material, an inert gaseous material; and a delivery head through which the reactant gaseous materials and the inert gaseous material are simultaneously directed toward the electronic device and the substrate. One or more of the reactant gaseous materials and the inert gaseous material flows through the delivery head. The flow of the one or more of the reactant gaseous materials and the inert gaseous material generates a pressure to create a gas fluid bearing that maintains a substantially uniform distance between the delivery head and the substrate. Relative motion between the delivery head and the substrate causes the second reactant gaseous material to react with at least a portion of the electronic device and the substrate that has been treated with the first reactant gaseous material.

Process for forming thin film encapsulation layers

The present invention provides an EL display adapted to receive a three-color input image signal, including three gamut-defining EL emitters for emitting red, green, and blue colored light and two additional EL emitters for emitting at least two additional colors of light, the chromaticity coordinates of the at least two additional colors of light lying inside the gamut and near the Plankian Locus; a structure for providing a display white point; and a controller responsive, to the provided display white point and the input image signal for providing first separate drive signals for the three gamut-defining EL emitters and second separate drive signals for the two additional EL emitters, wherein the respective luminance values corresponding to the second separate drive signals are each a function of the input image signal and the distances between the display white point and the pseudo-blackbody points of the two additional colors.

Apparatus for vaporizing a particulate material, comprising a metering apparatus including: a reservoir; a housing having an internal volume and first and second openings for respectively receiving and discharging the particulate material; a rotatable shaft disposed in the internal volume, the shaft having a smooth surface and a circumferential groove for receiving particulate material from the reservoir and for discharging the particulate material; the rotatable shaft and the internal volume cooperating such that the particulate material is transported by the circumferential groove and not along the remainder of the rotatable shaft; a scraper disposed in relation to the second opening, having at its end substantially the same cross section as the groove in the rotating shaft, the scraper cooperating with the groove to dislodge particulate material retained therein, and in response to the shaft rotating, delivers metered amounts of particulate material through the second opening; to the flash evaporator.

An OLED display, comprising: a substrate; an OLED having two spaced-apart electrodes and organic layers disposed therebetween and the OLED being disposed over the substrate; first desiccant material disposed over at least a portion of one of the electrodes; a compliant protection layer having a Young's Modulus &#x3c;4 GPa disposed over at least a portion of the first desiccant material; and an encapsulation container fixed to the substrate and disposed over the compliant protection layer.

A method of encapsulating an OLED device includes forming an OLED device on a substrate; providing a protective cover surrounding the OLED device and the substrate; providing a first sealing arrangement between the protective cover and top surface of the substrate, to define a first chamber enclosing the OLED device; providing a second sealing arrangement sealed to define a second chamber sealed from and enclosing the first chamber; and providing first desiccant material in the first chamber and providing second desiccant material in the second chamber closer to the bottom surface of the substrate than the top surface.

A method for controlling the deposition of vaporized organic material onto a substrate surface, includes providing a manifold having at least one aperture through which vaporized organic material passes for deposition onto the substrate surface; and providing a volume of organic material and maintaining the temperature of such organic material in a first condition so that its vapor pressure is below that needed to effectively form a layer on the substrate, and in a second condition heating a volume percentage of the initial volume of such organic material so that the vapor pressure of the heated organic material is sufficient to effectively form a layer.

A method for evaporating a plurality of purified organic materials in a thermal physical vapor deposition system, comprising the steps of: mixing predetermined amounts of first and second organic materials to form a mixture of materials at a predetermined ratio; processing at least one of the organic materials at less than the sublimation temperature of the at least one of the organic materials before or after mixing to remove a first contaminant, wherein if processing is after mixing, the processing temperature is lower than the sublimation temperature of each of the organic materials; providing a thermal physical vapor deposition source; transferring the purified mixture of organic materials into the thermal physical vapor deposition source while maintaining the purified mixture of organic materials in a controlled, contaminant-free environment; and using the source to evaporate the purified mixture of organic materials.

An OLED display, comprising: a substrate; an OLED having two spaced-apart electrodes and organic layers disposed there between, and the OLED disposed over the substrate; an encapsulation container fixed by perimeter seal to the substrate and disposed over the OLED to provide an enclosure; and the substrate or the encapsulation container, or both, including compliant regions that flex, compress, or expand under stress and reduce stress transfer between the substrate and the encapsulation container through the perimeter seal.

A method for vaporizing particulate material and depositing it onto a surface to form a layer, includes providing a supply of particulate material in a replenishment container, the replenishment container having a sealed interface fitting; mounting the replenishment container to a supply hopper defining at least one feed opening, and breaking the seal at the interface fitting; transferring particulate material from the replenishment container to the supply hopper; and transferring such particulate material through the feed opening along a feeding path to a vaporization zone where at least a component portion of the particulate material is vaporized and delivered to the surface to form the layer.
