The invention relates to a chemical compound of the formula NiM1M2(O)(OH), wherein M1 denotes at least one element from the group consisting of Fe, Co, Mg, Zn, Cu and/or mixtures thereof, M2 denotes at least one element from the group consisting of Mn, Al, B, Ca, Cr and/or mixtures thereof, wherein b&#x2264;0.8, c&#x2264;0.5, d&#x2264;0.5, and x is a number between 0.1 and 0.8, y is a number between 1.2 and 1.9, and x+y=2. A process for the preparation thereof, and the use thereof as a precursor for the preparation of cathode material for secondary lithium batteries are described.

The present invention relates to a particulate mixed metal hydroxide that includes nickel, cobalt and aluminium. The powder particles have a core of nickel/cobalt hydroxide, and a surface that is coated with amorphous aluminium hydroxide. A process for the continuous preparation of such mixed metal hydroxides is also described. The process includes precipitating aluminium hydroxide in the presence of a nickel/cobalt mixed hydroxide in a tube reactor. The mixed metal hydroxides of the present invention may be used to prepare active materials for positive electrodes of a secondary battery.

The invention relates to a method for producing metal hydroxides or alkaline metal carbonates by anode dissolution of the corresponding metals and precipitation of the hydroxides or alkaline carbonates in an aqueous medium. The anode dissolution of the metal components is carried out in the anode compartment of a three-compartment electrolytic cell. An aqueous auxiliary salt solution is fed to an intermediate compartment that is disposed between the anode compartment and the cathode compartment and that is separated therefrom by a porous membrane. An at least not alkaline metal salt solution is continuously taken from the anode compartment while an alkaline auxiliary salt solution is continuously taken from the cathode compartment. The at least not alkaline metal salt solution and the alkaline auxiliary salt solution are combined outside the electrolytic cell for the purpose of precipitating metal hydroxides or alkaline metal carbonates.
